PLYMSTOCK Oaks RFC have launched a new non-contact rugby session for women.
Their new T1 women’s rugby group will meet every Friday between 7.30pm and 8.30pm at Horsham Fields.
T1 is backed by World Rugby and the RFU and is slightly different to normal touch rugby and has been designed to try and reflect the unique characteristics of the union game.
The new group is open to any females and is described as ‘beginner friendly’, ‘fun and social’ and open to ‘all fitness levels’.
Oaks held their first session last Friday and had an impressive turn out.
“We have had one session so far and already have 30-plus members,” said organiser Greg Simmons.
“I started the T1 women’s rugby team because my daughter already plays for one of the younger age groups, and I wanted to help create a clear pathway for girls like her to continue playing as they grow older.
“I also wanted to give parents the chance to get involved in rugby themselves and become part of something together.
“For me, it’s about more than just sport. Rugby brings people together, builds confidence, improves fitness, and creates a real sense of community and belonging.
“Looking ahead, I’d also love to expand the club further by creating a men’s T1 team and eventually a combined set-up where everyone can be part of the same rugby family.”
Tavistock have been running a successful mixed T1 group for a year now on a Thursday evening between 8pm-9pm and other clubs are also looking at offering the non-contact game.
Any women interested in trying out T1 at Oaks can just turn up on a Friday or contact girls@PAORFC.co.uk
