CITY of Plymouth’s Poppy Tank says one of her dreams has come true after earning selection for the Team England squad for this summer’s Commonwealth Games.
Tank will compete in the 10,000m at Glasgow after been named in a 63-strong athletics squad.
However, there is no place for Erme Valley steeplechaser Will Battershill, despite his second place finish at the UK Championships this month, with the England selectors opting for Kristian Imroth and Zak Seddon, who had both run the tough qualifying mark the organisation had set. However, there is still a chance Battershill could be selected to compete at the European Championships in Birmingham.
Tank, though, is delighted to be in the squad for her first major track championship.
“I’m so excited to have been selected for the 10,000m on the track,” said the Great Britain cross country international.
“A lot of people are to thank for helping me reach this step in my career.
“My family and close friends know how much hard work has gone into achieving this goal, especially my mum and sisters.
“Little me would be so wowed to know one of her dreams came true.”
Team England Athletics leader Scott Grace said: “A huge congratulations to all of the athletes who have been selected to represent England. It is a huge honour to be team leader, and it has been fantastic to select and celebrate the full team of athletes who will represent our country this summer.
“I also pass on my congratulations to the athletes’ personal coaches, families and support teams on this achievement, and I look forward to working with them in the build-up to the Games.
“The Commonwealth Games is a prestigious event, and I am confident that this team will do us proud. It features a wide range of experience and emerging talent, from Olympic, World and previous Commonwealth Games medallists to Commonwealth Youth Games and junior international medallists.”
Also going to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow is Plymouth Swallows gymnast Ruby Stacey, who has been named in a 10-strong Team England gymnastics squad.
Stacey said: “I am beyond excited to announce that I’ve been selected for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. I’m so grateful for this opportunity.
“From being reserve in 2022 to being in the team this year is more than I could ever ask for.
“Thank you to everyone that has helped and supported me along the way – family, friends and coaches.”
Team England gymnastics team leader Steven Shuttlewood said: “This is a genuinely exciting team we are sending to Glasgow. There is a blend of experienced gymnasts, with some who have been to the Olympics, and others who will be attending their first multi-sport Games.”
“The depth of talent within this group is even reflected in the reserve gymnasts, who have one of the toughest jobs, but will be ready if needed.”
