Milburn and Dingley wins medals at the England U20 Championships, while Landers finishes second at Magnificent 7

TAVISTOCK AC’S Phoebie Milburn and City of Plymouth’s Adam Dingley both won bronze medals at the England Under-20 Championships at Bedford over the weekend.

The event took place at the same time as the senior national competition and doubled up as the British trials for the World Under-20 Championships.

Milburn made the podium in the hammer competition. She dug deep to produce a throw of 46.00m to claim a medal just ahead of her club team-mate Ella Patterson, who finished fourth with 45.33m.

Dingley’s medal came in the 110m hurdles. He eased through the heats with a 14.53 second run before clocking 14.51 seconds to take third in the final, which was won by Taunton’s Toby Wright.

Also in the under-20 championships, Plymouth’s Rory Summers made the semi-finals of the men’s 400m with a heat time of 49.44 second.

In the England Senior Championships, there was a strong performance from City of Plymouth’s Joshua Blake in the 800m.

He won his heat in 1:52.52 before finishing fifth in a tactical slow final in 1:56.64. The race was won by Jersey’s Ted Chamberlain in 1:55.95

In the senior 400m hurdles, Joely Bytheway ran 1:03.56 in the women’s event to reach the semi-finals, while Henry Curtis clocked 1:01.77 in the men’s event. In the senior women’s 200m, Jade Kinsey ran 25.77 seconds.

There were a number of new records set at the latest round of the South West Athletics League at Exeter on Sunday.

One of the most eye-catching was junior international Tegan Brown breaking the women’s hammer record with a throw of 52.21m, which ranks her in the UK’s top 30 seniors.

Another senior women’s record to go was in the 100m hurdles, where City of Plymouth’s Emily Bee won in a time of 13.94 seconds.

In the new junior age categories, Plymouth’s Lexi Hollister set a new best mark of 12.84 seconds in the under-14 girls’ 75m hurdles.

There was a PB for Tavistock hammer thrower Isabelle Doney, who won the under-18 event with a 47.66m effort.

Plymouth’s Nia Harradine-Cole won the under-20 200m in 25.80 seconds. She was also first under-20 and second overall in the joint 400m race in 57.85 seconds.

City of Plymouth’s Harvey Slade continued his impressive season with victory in the under-14 boys’ 100m in 12.59 seconds. He also came second in the 200m in 25.45 seconds.

Rory Price impressed in the under-16 boys’ 100m, winning in 11.84 seconds. He also finished second in the 100m hurdles in 15.14 seconds.

Joe Bacon clocked a quick 22.74 seconds and 49.61 seconds to finish second in both the men’s 200m and 400m, while Lucas Sweeney, who is ranked in the UK’s top 30 in the under-14 1,500m, clocked 4:34.82 to finish second in a strong metric mile race.

On the road, Tamar Trotters’ Jacob Landers had to settle for second place as his club hosted their annual Magnificent 7 race on Sunday.

Landers, winner in 2023, was edged out by last year’s champion Steve Reynolds of Truro, who won in 38.18 minutes.

Third place went to Newquay’s Jamie Edwards in 40.15 minutes.

St Austell’s Clare Dale won the women’s race in 51.51 minutes, with Truro’s Jenna Bissell second in 52.02 minutes and Tamar Trotters’ Lydia Herbert third in 53.23 minutes.

There were age group titles for Plymouth Musketeers’ Kelly Brumhead (F45), Tavistock’s Carole Walters (F60), Tamar Trotters’ Jane Bremner (F65), East Cornwall Harriers’ Margaret Kinaham (F70), Tavistock’s Peter Bazley (M70) and Looe’s Paul Wright (M80), while Tamar Trotters’ Luke Attwood was second M35.
