CITY of Plymouth’s Annabelle Fasuba and Tavistock AC’s Tegan Brown and Hazel Stead all claimed national gold medals at the weekend at the England Age Group Championships in Bedford.

Three-times English Schools’ champion Fasuba stormed to victory in a high-class under-16 girls’ 100m final on Saturday.

The race was one of the highlights of the championships with all eight finalists having to run under 12 seconds just to even make the final.

Fasuba eased through her heat in 12.18 seconds, before winning her semi-final in 11.74 seconds.

She didn’t get the best start in the final but showed her power in the middle third of the race to storm through and convincingly take victory in a wind-assisted PB time of 11.45 seconds.

Afterwards the 15-year-old said: “Really happy with my time, (now) hoping to run a 11.4 with a legal wind.”

There was a Devon 100m double as Torbay’s Keeley Little won the under-18 girls’ event in 11.61 seconds.

Brown and Stead both won their medals in the hammer competition.

Brown claimed the England under-18 title with a throw of 54.48m.

Two Welsh athletes – Swansea’s Eveie Cooper and Neath’s Amelia Mitchell – did throw further but they were not eligible for the national medals.

Stead, who like Fasuba, made her England Schools’ debut last weekend, was second behind Brown in the under-18 England event and also won the under-17 girls’ title with 52.20m.

There was also an England bronze medal for their Tavistock AC team-mate Freddie Whybrow in a highly-competitive under-16 boys’ 1,500m.

He took no chances in his heat, front running it and comfortably winning in 4:16.58.

The final 24 hours later, produced a great race with five athletes pulling away early on. Whybrow went with the leading group and finished fourth overall in 4:08.49 but he was the third English athlete, with Wales’ Nate Greig finishing second overall behind Macclesfield’s Joseph Osuji, who took victory.

Elsewhere at the championships, City of Plymouth’s Josh Bloxham reached the semi-finals of the under-18 400m with a 50.88 second heat run.

Tavistock’s Charlotte Doney set a new PB of 35.64m to finish ninth overall and eighth English athlete in the under-18 girls’ discus.

In the under-18 girls’ 400m hurdles, Erme Valley Harriers’ Isabella Trowell ran 1:12.15 in the heats and City of Plymouth’s Robyn Summers 1:15.23.
