ATHLETICS ROUND-UP: Region’s athletes impress at county championships, while Oldfield is first home in Armada Summer 5k

ATHLETES from the region enjoyed plenty of success at county championship events that were held at the weekend.

Tavistock hammer thrower Tegan Brown continued her impressive season in the under-18 girls’ age group by throwing another 55m-plus effort to win gold at the Devon County Championship event at Exeter.

Brown, who is ranked third in the UK, threw 55.87m to claim yet another county title.

Club colleague Josh Tyler dominated the men’s throwing events at the championships.

He won his favourite shot event with an effort of 14.47m, but he also won the hammer with 45.73m and the discus with 36.85m.

Tavistock’s Charlotte Pestridge set a new PB of 37.54m to win the under-14 girls’ hammer, which ranks her in the UK’s top eight. She also won the discus with 21.50m.

There was also hammer success for George Brown in the under-18 boys’ section with a throw of 45.32m.

Fellow Tavistock athlete Evie Palmer took victory in the under-20 women’s javelin with 35.65m, while team-mate Mabel Maguire won the under-16 girls’ javelin title with 33.15m.

Erme Valley Harriers’ Isabella Trowell picked up two gold medals and silver at Exeter. She won the under-18 girls’ javelin with a throw of 31.26m, took victory in the 400m hurdles in a time of 68.92 seconds and came second in the 100m hurdles in 16.38 seconds.

City of Plymouth’s Evie Bolt claimed a hat-trick of titles in the under-12 girls’ category. She won the 600m in 1:52.6, the 70m hurdles in 14.13m and also took gold in the shot.

Millie Easton was another City of Plymouth athlete to win three titles in the under-12 age group. Her gold medals came in the 75m (11.45 seconds), long jump (3.76m) and 150m (21.52 seconds).

Club colleague Harvey Slade continued his good early season form by winning both the under-14 boys’ 100m and 200m just days after breaking a 41-year-old club record in the 200m with a 25.89 second run at the South West League. Slade won the Devon 200m title in 26.26 and the 100m in 13.18 seconds.

Tavistock AC dominated the under-16 boys’ middle distance events.

Eldon Young won the 800m in 2:11.36, with Freddie Whybrow and Thomas Hennessey coming first and second in the 1,500m in 4:14.42 and 4:17.52, respectively, while Luke Scott-Tucker took gold in the same age group’s 1,500m steeplechase in 4:42.74, which ranks him fourth in the UK.

Plymouth’s Jack Penney impressed in the under-12 boys’ 1,200m. He won by 15 seconds in a time of 3:55.54, while team-mate Ivy Ling won the corresponding girls’ race in 4:23.86.

Jade Kinsey won the senior women’s 200m and 400m titles in 26.52 seconds and 58.71 seconds, while Plymouth’s Josh Blake took top honours in the senior men’s 400m in 51.40, while club colleague Nia Harradine-Cole won the under-20 women’s 400m in 59.11 seconds.

City of Plymouth’s Elsie Goodspeed took victory in the under-16 girls’ 800m by five seconds, clocking 2:16.09. She is currently ranked 13th in the UK with a season’s best time of 2:13.14.

Team-mate Evie Welsh secured the gold medal in the under-14 girls’ 800 in 2:33.46, while Erme Valley’s Molly Cole was first in the under-16 girls’ 1,500m steeplechase.

Tavistock’s Katelyn Milburn claimed three under-20 women’s titles. She won her specialist event of the triple jump with 10.46m and was also first in her category in the hammer with 28.94m and the long jump with 4.88m

Erme Valley’s Freya Norris won the under-14 shot and also secured a bronze in the 800m.

Plymouth’s Eloise Morley triumphed in the in the under-14 girls’ 75m hurdles, while senior club colleague Toby Clayden won the men’s 110m hurdles in 16.46 seconds.

There were also titles for juniors Lochlan Burns (Plymouth, U12 javelin), George Lake (Plymouth, U12 HJ), Alicia Ferrero-Lewis (Erme Valley, U12 javelin) and Tommy Saunders (Erme Valley, U12 shot), while there were veteran titles for Plymouth’s 400m hurdler Neal Edwards and Tavistock throwers Leifr Fredriksson-Lines, Jon Bond and Clive Thomson.

There was also success for City of Plymouth and Tavistock AC athletes at the Cornwall County Championships at Par.

Plymouth’s Ayla Orgacki won both the under-16 girls’ 200m and 300m events. She clocked 26.5 seconds for the 200m and 42.00 seconds for the 300m.

There were also two titles for club team-mates Lexi Hollister, Shara Ingleby and Darcy Shilton.

Hollister won both the under-14 girls’ 75m and 200m hurdles events, just edging out her team-mate Tilly Day in both finals.

Hollister clocked 13.1 in the 75m hurdles event, with Day second in 13.8 seconds, while in the 200m hurdles Hollister clocked 33.3 seconds and Day 33.7 seconds.

Ingleby also claimed a hurdles title. She won the under-12 70m hurdles event in 14.7 seconds and also took victory in the shot with 6.49m.

Shilton won the under-12 girls’ 75m in 11.5 seconds and the long jump in 3.30m and also came second in the 150m.

There were two titles also for Tavistock’s Daisy Wrigley. She won the under-14 girls’ 100m and 200m in 13.1 seconds and 29.1 seconds.

Plymouth’s Joe Bacon triumphed in the men’s 400m hurdles in 58.4 seconds, while club colleague Taylan Jones won the under-18 boys’ 800m in 2:12.4 and Ava Buxton took gold in the under-14 girls’ 800m in 2:30.4.

Lucas Sweeney won the under-14 boys’ 800m in 2:23.6 and he also took second in the 200m, while fellow Plymouth athlete Theia Jones triumphed in the under-12 girls’ 600m in 1:58.8.

Tamar Trotters’ Oliver Oldfield was first home at Wednesday’s May Armada Summer 5k Series run at Saltram House.

Oldfield completed the new-look trail course in a time of 17 minutes and 36 seconds.

Second home was Chris Casey, who clocked 18.25 minutes, with Erme Valley Harriers’ Peter Allen third in 18.43 minutes. Tavistock’s Iain Gillam, who came fourth, was the only other runner to go under 19 minutes in windy conditions.

Rosie Hellings was first woman home in 22.11 minutes, with Plymouth Tri Club’s Jan Worpole second in 24.07 minutes and Plymouth Harriers’ Michelle Cartlidge third in 24.22 minutes.
