GALLERY: Rainey and Smith claim titles at the Burrator Horseshoe fell race on Dartmoor

TAVISTOCK AC’s Hannah Smith retained the women’s title at the Burrator Horseshoe fell race on Saturday.

Smith secured the win by more than three minutes, clocking 51.54 minutes, which was nearly four minutes quicker than she had run on her way to victory 12 months ago.

The men’s 2026 title went to Tom Rainey, who held off the challenge of City of Plymouth’s Luke Gribbin.

Rainey won in 43.02 minutes, with Gribbin second in 44.12 minutes and Oliver Mitchell took third in 44.33. Tavistock AC’s Arthur Norton was fifth overall and first under-20.

Hayley Barratt came second to Smith in the women’s race in 55.14 minutes, with Okehampton’s Emma Brock third in 58.36 minutes.

The tough six-mile plus run takes athletes out of Meavy Village to Burrator Reservoir and then straight up the summit of Sheeps Tor and Gutter Tor before returning to the start. It forms part of the Meavy Oak Fair.

This year organisers also held a shortened fell race of around four miles, which only ascended Sheeps Tor. That race saw Tavistock’s under-18 athlete Grace Gokhale beat her male and female rivals to win in 27.52 minutes. Adam Wheatley, also under-18, was second and first male in 28.35 minutes.

Before the senior races, there were also junior events. Evie Jervis and Kilian Meyerhoff won the under-10 races, Dominic Drew-Hill and Serena Bigham took the under-12 titles, with Daniel Brown and Neve Blacker triumphing in the under-14 age group and Jack Anthony and Willow Jameson taking top honours in the under-16 age group.
