TAVISTOCK AC’s Tegan Brown smashed her personal best to claim victory for England in the under-18 girls’ hammer at the Pickering Memorial International at Loughborough on Sunday.
The English Schools’ champion threw an impressive 58.88m, which was more than a metre longer than she had ever thrown before in competition.
It also won the international event by more than one-and-a-half metres, with fellow England athlete Tilly Ryan (Medway) second with 57.37m and Scotland’s Sophie Robertson third with 57.04m.
It was the second time Brown had broken a PB while representing England as she did the same last year at the SIAB International.
“It went really well,” said Brown after Sunday’s performance. “I got a PB in the first round which felt amazing and then carried it on.
“I caged one, but I think I’ve proved to myself that I can do more – I just need to get it out there.”
Meanwhile, Great Britain internationals Will Battershill and Poppy Tank were both in action at the BMC GP in Birmingham on Saturday night.
Battershill won the men’s steeplechase in 8:29.41, which is inside Team England’s Commonwealth Games qualifying mark, although four years ago England Athletics did not select any male steeplechasers even though a number had run the standard.
Battershill had a bit of a solo run at Birmingham with Ireland’s Finley Daly taking second in 8:35.63 and Spain’s Gonzalo Parra third in 8:35.85.
City of Plymouth’s Tank finished third in the women’s Fast 5,000m in 15:45.15.
She was only beaten by Hannah Irwin and Charlotte Dannott, who both broke their PBs.
