ANNABELLE Fasuba, Bryan Oldfield, Nicolas Maczugowski and Tegan Brown were among the athletes to set new records at the Devon Schools’ Track & Field Championships at Exeter.
English Schools’ champion Fasuba broke the 100m and 200m junior girls’ championship best performances.
The UK number one under-15 athlete already held the 100m record having set it last year with a 12.13 second run, but she lowered it on Saturday, winning in 12.04 seconds.
The Combe Dean pupil also broke the junior girls’ 200m record, taking victory in 24.93 seconds.
However, in both finals the City of Plymouth AC athlete was pushed pretty hard by South Devon’s Isla Perry, who clocked 12.69 and 25.16 seconds to finish second in both events.
For the second year running, Bryan Oldfield also broke a sprint record.
Twelve months ago, the Devonport High School for Boys’ pupil, broke the junior boys’ 100m record, while this time around he set a new intermediate boys’ new best. He won a thrilling final in 11.07 seconds.
Second place went to Tavistock’s Joe Wake, who clocked 11.22 seconds, which was just one hundred of a second faster than David Oldfield, who took third in 11.23 seconds.
In the 200m, the two Oldfields took first and second, with Bryan winning his second gold in a time of 22.87 seconds, with David claiming silver in 23.40 seconds.
Tavistock College’s Maczugowski broke the senior boys’ 400m hurdles record. The City of Plymouth AC athlete clocked 53.36 seconds for victory, which was more than two-and-a-half seconds inside the previous championship best performance.
His school colleague Tegan Brown (Tavistock AC) broke the intermediate girls’ hammer record with a personal best throw of 55.73 seconds, which moves her up to second in the UK under-17 rankings. She also won a bronze medal in the intermediate girls’ 100m, running 13.72 seconds. However, unfortunately she did fall at the end of the race and injured her knee.
Tavistock throwers were again in dominant force at Exeter.
Brown’s school and club colleagues Hazel Stead and Tallulah Devar took second and third in the intermediate girls’ hammer behind her. Last year’s English Schools’ junior champion Stead threw a PB of 49.00m, while Devar also set a new best of 37.17m.

Mount Kelly’s Freddie Whybrow (Tavistock AC) smashed his PB to win the junior boys’ 1,500m. He clocked 4:18.87, which is under the English Schools’ entry standard and was four seconds faster than he had previously run.
His club colleague Eldon Young knocked nearly 11 seconds off his PB to finish second in 4:24.16, with Luke Scott-Tucker third in 4:27.28.
Another Tavistock AC runner, Caleb Gifford-Groves (Mount Kelly) produced an impressive solo run to win the intermediate boys’ 800m in 1:57.55, which was less than a second off the championship record.
Second place went to City of Plymouth and Plymstock School’s Finley Bennett, who clocked 2:06.92. Bennett was also second in the 400m in 53.69 seconds.
In the intermediate boys’ 1,500m, Conner Duffin took silver with a 4:22.03, while Benjamin Marriott claimed third in that age group’s 3,000m with a 9:45.55 run.

The hurdles event saw the championship record go with Joshua Taylor clocking a PB time of 13.66 seconds.
Meanwhile, a former Devon and English Schools’ champion Will Battershill showed he is in good form ahead of his full track debut for Great Britain by running his second faster 3,000m steeplechase time of his career at the weekend.
Battershill, who has been selected to represent GB at this month’s European Athletics Team Championship in Madrid, ran 8:21.91 to take second place in an international field at the Track Night Vienna in Austria. That was just 0.08 off his PB. The former Ivybridge Community College pupil was only beaten by Spain’s Alejandro Quijada, who just edged him out on the line with a 8:21.63 run.
