WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Elm United and Signal Box progress in cup, while Plympton claim another league win

ELM United and Signal Box both made progress in the Devon Women’s League Cup at the weekend.

Elm did pull off a little bit of a shock by beating their unbeaten league rivals Horrabridge Rangers away 4-3 on penalties.

The tie at Fillace Park was 1-1 at the end of normal time, with both goals coming early in the first half.

Crystal-Mae Pollock fired Elm ahead in the opening few minutes from the penalty spot, before Leah Parnell-Moses equalised for Horrabridge 15 minutes later.

The game stayed at 1-1 until 90 minutes, although Horrabridge should have won it with a great chance just before the full-time whistle.

Elm did see their opening penalty saved and Horrabridge went 3-2 ahead in the shoot-out but United’s goalkeeper managed to save the next two to put them into the next round.

Signal Box joined them by beating The Victory Pub 4-0 away.

Melanie Finch, Daisy Moulding, Olivia Jones and Carla Morrison scored for Signal Box.

But fellow Weston Mill side SB Oak Villa went out of the competition. They lost 2-0 to Teignmouth under the Devon FA floodlights at Coach Road on Friday night.

In the South West Women’s League Division One South, leaders Plympton maintained their 100 per cent record with a 3-1 away victory at Weymouth.

Sam Metters, Bella Brown-Tunnell and Isabelle Firth scored for Plympton.

Their league rivals, Saltash United, who are also unbeaten, were handed a Cornwall County Cup walkover by Padstow.

In the Cornwall League Premier Division, Rachel Finch scored a hat-trick as Saltash Borough beat RNAS Culdrose 3-0 at Saltmill.

There is a big weekend of women’s football coming up with Plymouth Argyle, Saltash United and Marine Academy Plymouth all in FA Cup action.

Argyle will host Poole Town at Home Park, while Saltash United have a big home match against higher league Bournemouth. Marine Academy are on the road as they visit Bursledan.
