WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Argyle reach League Cup quarter-finals, while Marine Academy and Plympton move top of their leagues

PLYMOUTH Argyle booked their place in the quarter-finals of the FA Women’s National League Cup, thanks to a battling 2-1 home win over Southern Premier Division rivals Billericay Town.

They will now play Watford at home in the last eight on December 1.

Sunday’s cup game was a welcome return to winning ways for the Pilgrims, who had lost their last three matches.

The Greens did go behind early on at Home Park against Billericay, with Bonnie Horwood scoring a free-kick for the Essex side.

But just before half-time, Charlotte Whitmore chipped a fine goal in after a good pass by Katie Dickson to level the cup tie.

And in the 64th minute, Georgia Wilson scored the winning goal for Argyle after good play by Ella Stephens.

Afterwards manager Ryan Perks, who was particularly impressed with his side’s defensive effort, said: “It’s nice to get the win. We spoke to the girls before the game about breaking the run of poor results and this will give us some confidence.”

In the South West Premier Division, Marine Academy Plymouth moved top after they beat Bishops Lydeard 5-0 at Manadon on Sunday.

New signing Kelsey Blight fired them ahead after just nine minutes with a fine strike after a good turn.

And eight minutes later, Carmen Morison made it 2-0 after some great play from the home side.

Marine made it 3-0 in the 24th minute when Morison put in a cross for Taylor Ford to score.

That was how it stayed until half-time as the visitors made changes to try to stop the constant threat of Morison and Blight.

Marine had to be patient in the second half, but finally a fourth goal did arrive when Amy Pridham fired home after Blight had done really well down the right.

And, with five minutes to go, Pridham was there again to fire in from the six-yard box.

Although Marine do sit top of the standings, second-placed Forest Green Rovers do have two games in hand.

Plympton moved to the top of South West Division One South after they extended their winning run with a 3-0 home victory over Yeovil Town at Devonport High School for Boys.

Elsa Finnegan netted twice for Plympton, who also had Izzy Rogers on target.

Newly-promoted Plympton and Saltash United are now the only teams still unbeaten in that division.

Saltash United should have been in Cornwall County Cup action on Sunday but their match against Padstow was one of many to fall foul of the horrible weather.

Elm United’s game against Horrabridge Rangers in the Devon League Cup was also postponed.

However, Saltash Borough did play their Cornwall Cup match against Mousehole at Saltmill and won 5-0. Harriett Howell netted twice for Borough, who also had Rachel Finch, Lucy Borthwick and Abby Shapland on target.
