West hopes to back-up Hawks’ title-winning success by earning a place in Team GB’s Paralympic squad

PLYMOUTH wheelchair rugby star Faye West is hoping to back up her title-winning success with the West Country Hawks by earning selection for Team GB’s Paralympic squad for Paris.

West captained the Hawks to their first national title and now she is hoping for more glory this summer.

She is in the GB training squad and she admits it would mean the world to her if she could make the final cut for the Paralympics.

“Selection hasn’t happened yet, but I am training to hopefully be selected,” she said.

“That is the end goal and what I am training every day for.

“It would mean everything and would show that all the hard work pays off. It would just be a great opportunity at high level sport.

“We are the current Paralympic champions so it’s a great place to be if you get selected.”

West is the second-longest serving member of the West Country Hawks squad, having joined them as a teenager.

And she was thrilled to help lead them to their inaugural national title, which they sealed in the final tournament at the Plymouth Life Centre.

“It’s been many years of hard work and it was a special moment for it to happen in our home training venue,” she said.

The Hawks were only founded in 2011 but they have come a long way since.

“I’m not surprised,” said West. “Every player in the club and the support staff all work really hard and I think we create a great atmosphere and community spirit and so I think it is nice to get that reward in terms of performance as well.

“I might be a bit biased, but I’d say there is a lot of talent in Devon.”

The Hawks are always looking for potential new players who would like to try the sport.  Anyone interested in getting involved can contact the club via their website HERE.
