GALLERY: Region’s athletes end Westward Cross Country League Series on a high at Redruth

TAVISTOCK’S Zoe Bigham, Thomas Hennessey and Tristan Bigham and City of Plymouth’s Molly Shorey and Daisy Elliot were among the winners as the Westward Cross Country League concluded at Redruth on Sunday.

Conditions were tough for the competitors in the final event of the series, with changeable weather throughout the day and plenty of mud.

Hennessey, showing he was back to his best, took victory in the under-13 boys’ race by 11 seconds to also win the series title in that age group.

In the same race on Sunday, his Tavistock team-mate Freddie Whybrow was sixth, City of Plymouth’s Taylan Jones was seventh and Tavistock’s Archie Neale also made the top 10.

Tavistock AC took team silver in the under-13 boys’ category in the series.

In the under-13 girls’ race at Redruth, Zoe Bigham stormed to victory by 20 seconds. She also finished as runner-up in the series.

City of Plymouth’s Ayla Orgacki was fifth on Sunday, with Tavistock’s Grace Gokhale and Suzie Woodrow also making the top 10 as their club took team silver overall, with Plymouth third.

City of Plymouth’s Daisy Elliot has been dominant in the under-11 age group during the series and she continued her good form with another victory at Redruth, which secured her the overall title.

Once again there was a strong showing from Armada athletes in the under-11 girls’ race, with seven in the top 10. Tavistock’s Olivia Walkerdine took second place on Sunday, with Plymouth’s Genevieve Stone third, Theia Jones fourth, Tilly Day seventh, Tavistock’s Fearne Brogden eighth and Plymouth’s Shara Ingleby 10th.

Tavistock’s Tristan Bigham overcame City of Plymouth rival Lucas Sweeney by four seconds on Sunday in the under-11 boys’ race. Sweeney, however, took the series title, with Bigham second.

Plymouth’s Sebastian Travers was fourth in the same race at Redruth, with team-mate Jacob Sweeney eighth.

There was a second-placed finish at the weekend for Tavistock’s Lamorna Cox in the under-15 girls’ race, while in the under-15 boys’ event, Tavistock’s Connor Duffin claimed third place, with City of Plymouth’s Daniel Salmon seventh.

There was another strong run by Erme Valley Harriers teenager Matthew Gilvear in the senior men’s race. He finished third, which was also the position he secured in the series.

Tavistock’s Ben Neale claimed his best finish of the season by finishing fourth at Redruth, with City of Plymouth veteran Kairn Stone recovering from a fall to finish 10th and first M45.

Plymouth Harriers’ Johnny Gilby did not compete at Redruth, but he won the series M40 title, with Tavistock’s Thomas Brogden second.

Stone was second overall in a strong M45 category, with Erme Valley’s Allister Bristow winning the M50 title and his team-mate Ken Summers finishing runner-up in the M65 category. Tavistock’s David Harris was second overall in the M60 section.

Erme Valley secured third in the men’s team event, with City of Plymouth third in the veteran team competition.

Tavistock’s first-year under-20 athlete Charlotte Walker continued her good season by finishing fourth in the senior women’s race behind the Exeter University trio of Inca Padfield, Millie Porter and Tallulah Robin-Redmond.

City of Plymouth’s Molly Shorey was fifth overall on Sunday and first under-17, with East Cornwall Harriers’ Georgie Gilbert fourth in that age group.

There were series age group titles for Tavistock Run Project’s Rachel Malthouse, Erme Valley’s Emma Lake and Tavistock’s Caroline Steven.

Malthouse won the F35 category, with Plymouth Harriers’ Michelle Cooper as runner-up.

Lake took the F45 age group crown, with team-mate Jennifer Hayes third.

Stevens won the F55 section, ahead of Erme Valley’s Kate Medicott and Plymouth Harriers’ Miranda Burke, while Tavistock’s Carole Walters was runner-up in the F60 category.
