Plymouth divers make their mark at early season British National Cup in Edinburgh

PLYMOUTH divers impressed at the early season British National Cup in Edinburgh at the weekend.

Four-time Olympic medallist Tom Daley continued his comeback by winning gold in the men’s platform synchronised event with new partner Noah Williams.

The pair had teamed up at last month’s London Legacy Open where they scored an impressive 474.57 points, which included one dive of 102.60 points.

They could not quite match that score in Edinburgh, but they still easily claimed victory with 422.46 points in Daley’s first major competition since the Tokoyo Olympics.

After more than two years out of the sport, Daley, who has his eyes on a fifth Olympic Games, is glad to be back.

“It felt really weird to come back [to the sport],” said Daley. “I felt quite shy in a way to get back into it, because I had been part of that team for so long, and then to step out and see how things had changed, it felt weird and different.

“But it is really nice to be back. I feel really happy, I’m enjoying it and that’s the main thing.”

He added: “It was weird to dive in front of a crowd with people – last time I competed, there was nobody there in Tokyo.

“But it is very nice to be back and get that adrenaline going again.”

Also on the senior podium in Edinbrugh, where the British National Cup was combined with the Scottish National Championships, was Matthew Dixon, who took bronze in the men’s one-metre final.

Dixon, who had qualified for the final in first place, scored 364.65 points in the final to finish third behind Ross Haslam and James Heatly.

Plymouth youngster Oliver Heath, who was recently named on British Swimming World Class Programme after winning a European junior title in the summer, came 11th in the final, while team-mate Archie Warnes was 13th in the prelims.

In the three-metre final, Dixon came sixth, with Heath ninth and Waines 17th in the prelims. Heath did claim a bronze for finishing as third junior.

European junior medallist Euan McCabe just missed out on a senior medal in the men’s platform event. He finished fourth overall with 452.10 points and was only beaten by Williams, Kyle Kothari and Robbie Lee. McCabe had qualified second with 456.10 points, which showed his consistency in Scotland.

Another talented Plymouth youngster Amelie Underwood just missed out on a senior medal in the women’s one-metre event. She finished fourth and was the junior silver medallist with 222.40 points.

Underwood, who had also medalled in London last month, was eighth overall and junior gold medallist in the three-metre event with 214.90 points.
