GALLERY: Plymouth Marjon find Repton too strong in cup semi-final

PLYMOUTH Marjon Hockey Club’s hopes of a remarkable 2020 men’s league and cup double were ended by a strong Repton side on Saturday.

Marjon’s first team had already wrapped up their league title to secure promotion to Men’s Conference West before going into this weekend’s National Tier Two Cup semi-final against Derbyshire outfit Repton.

They had hoped to book a place in next week’s National Finals day in Nottingham, but Repton, coached by England and Great Britain star Martin Jones, had other ideas.

With Jones playing an important role on the field, Repton stormed into a 3-0 half-time lead in glorious sunshine at Marjon. James Sookias scored the pick of those first-half goals.

Repton went 4-0 early in the second half before Marjon did briefly threaten a comeback with a goal from Jevon Rimmer from a well-worked penalty corner.

But Repton stepped up again and took control of the ball. They did think they had scored a fifth, but it was disallowed.

The match did draw a good crowd, although due to Covid restrictions nobody was allowed on pitchside.

Marjon’s men will now turn their attentions to life back in the National League. They will open their 2020-21 Conference West campaign on September 27 when they travel to Ashmoor.
