MOUNT Kelly and Tavistock Run Project athlete Oliver Smart may still get the chance to represent England at the ISF World Schools’ Cross Country Championships after all.
Smart should have been part of the England team that was competing at the prestigious event in Slovakia this week. He was named in the six-strong boys’ team, alongside fellow Devon athlete Flynn Jennings. However, the event was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
But organisers have provisionally rescheduled the championships for early November and Smart has been asked by England if he would still like to take part if it does go ahead then.
Smart did represent England at last year’s SIAB International after winning the English Schools’ intermediate boys’ title, but the ISF World Championships would be his first global competition.
There will not be any English Schools’ Track & Field Championships this year due to the coronavirus, but it is hoped the British Athletics Championships will go ahead on the new dates of August 8/9 at Manchester Arena. The British Championships should have been held in June and were set to trials for this summer’s Olympics, but the Tokyo Games have been moved to 2021 due to the worldwide crisis.
