SWIMMERS from the region helped Devon to runners-up spot at the County Championships in Sheffield.
Devon finished with a total of 435 points, with Yorkshire just edging them out for the title with 456 points. Lancashire were third with 423 points.
Plymouth Leander and Mount Kelly made up the bulk of the Devon squad, with 23 swimmers coming from those two clubs.
Mount Kelly’s Athena Clayson returned home with two titles. She claimed victory in the 16/17 year-old girls’ 100m freestyle in 56.14 seconds and then helped Devon to medley relay gold in the same age category. Joining her in the relay team was school-mate Savannah Best and Plymouth Leander’s Tegan Drew and Madelyn Moore.
Devon won two more relay titles – the 16/17 year-old boys’ 200m medley and the mixed 6x50m freestyle relay.
The boys relay team was made up of Mount Kelly’s Harry Noble, Oliver Taverner, Sam Dailley (pictured) and South Hunsley’s James Watson.
The mixed freestyle relay squad was Watson, Plymouth Leander’s Reid Jones, Ella Bardgett and Moore, Devonport Royal’s Aiden Symons-Brown and Mount Kelly’s Kaylee Dekker.
There was a silver medal for former Dinnaton swimmer Cameron Williams, who now competes for Dartmoor Darts, in the 12/13 year-old boys’ 100m breaststroke in 1:09.39, while Dailley claimed bronze in the 16/17 100m butterfly event in 55.73 seconds.
There was also an individual third place for Mount Kelly’s Best in the 16/17 year-old girls’ 100m breaststroke in 1:10.64.
Leander’s Honey Osrin and Jones and Mount Kelly’s Dekker just missed out on individual medals with fourth placed finishes, while there were top eight individual placings for Leander’s Drew, Lana Broekhoven, Oriana Noel, David O’Loughlin and Ra’eez Worley and Mount Kelly’s Taverner.
