ATHLETICS ROUND-UP: Tavistock youngster Whybrow sets UK-leading time at Sportsshoes Podium 5K

TAVISTOCK AC’s Freddie Whybrow produced a storming run to win his category in a UK-leading time at the Sportsshoes Podium 5K in Cardiff at the weekend.

Running in the elite men’s race, which was also doubling as the Home Nations 5k Championships, Whybrow finished 34th overall in a gun-time of 14.54:02 and a net time of 14.52:14.

He was first under-17 athlete and he is the first under-16 to run under 15 minutes for the 5k on the road this year.

Meanwhile, City of Plymouth international Poppy Tank joined forces with club colleagues Phoebe Timson and Bella May to compete at the Southern Road Relays at Aldershot.

Tank clocked the fastest leg of the day, clocking 20.04 minutes, with Timson running 23.34 minutes and May 26.45 minutes.

Unfortunately, they did not have a fourth member to make the four-team event, but they were the top three team finisher.

Also on the roads at the weekend, Mike Wilsmore took victory in the Run Barnstaple Marathon in 2:33.41.

Ross Portass was first M50 in the marathon and fellow Tamar Trotter Jane Bremner was second F60.

In the Run Barnstaple Half Marathon, Erme Valley Harriers’ Alison Engledew was first F60.

There was success the week before for Storm Plymouth’s Lauren Knox at the Torquay Half Marathon. She took victory in 1:22.54.

At that event, Erme Valley picked up a number of age group prizes. They filled the top three M50 places with Simon Fitze winning the category and coming sixth overall in 1:18.02, with Allister and Nick Bristow second and third.

Emma Lake was first F50 with team-mate Jennifer Hayes third in the same category.

In the Torquay 10k, Erme Valley youngster Luke Hayes produced a strong run to finish second overall and first under-20 in 35.14 minutes.

City of Plymouth’s Bella May was second woman and first under-20 in 45.36 minutes.

Plymouth Harriers’ Raymond Tew finished in the overall top 10 and was first M50, with Tamar Trotters’ Shaun Rendle second.

Elizabeth Bristow was first F50, while Erme Valley team-mate Alison Engledew wonthe F65 category.

Plymouth Musketeers’ Rodney Hillebrandt took victory in the M75 age group in 59.35 minutes.
