Newell and Ezra claim titles at Plymstock’s Muddy Duck 10k race

OXFORD City’s veteran international Les Newell won Plymstock Road Runners’ Muddy Duck 10k on Saturday evening.

Newell, who finished fourth in last year’s World Masters’ Championships over-40 1,500m, produced a dominant display on his trip to Devon.

He powered away from Storm Plymouth’s Ross Perkin at around the halfway mark of the tough multi-terrain run and never looked back.

Newell clocked 37 minutes and 46 seconds for the run that takes athletes from Oreston Academy School and into Radford Park, where they do two laps of a circuit that includes water crossings and steep hills.

Perkins took second in 39.10, with Plymouth Harriers’ Alex Peyton-Jones claiming third in 40.04.

Teignbridge Trotters filled the next two spots with Garry Smart finishing fourth and first over-50 in 40.16 and Roger Easterbrook came fifth in 40.19.

Plymouth Harriers’ David Beckenkrager was sixth and first over-45 in 41.30.

Tamar Trotters’ Rebecca Ezra was in impressive form to take the women’s title. She finished ninth overall in 43.20 minutes.

Second female and first over-35 was Plymouth Harriers’ Ami Yetton, who clocked 35.37, while Erme Valley Harriers’ Emma Lake came third overall and first over-40 in 46.07.

There was an impressive turnout for the race. More than 200 athletes entered with 194 starting and finishing the race, which was run in perfect conditions.
