City College to host Plymouth Barbell Weightlifting Open this weekend

PLYMOUTH Barbell Club are hosting an Olympic weightlifting contest at City College this weekend.

The Plymouth Barbell Weightlifting Open on Saturday will see 40 competitors from as young as 15 years-old taking part.

The event is being supported by City College strength and conditioning foundation degree students.

The students will be helping with the running of the event and assisting competitors with warm-up activities in the pre-competition practice area.

Plymouth Barbell Club owner Billy Hannah said: “This event is an excellent opportunity to encourage weightlifters to consider strength and conditioning qualifications with the college, while also providing students vital work experience with athletes.”

Ian Davis, strength, conditioning and sports coaching programme leader at the City College added: “Working closely with local companies such as the Plymouth Barbell Club is really beneficial for developing our students’ knowledge in the most effective methods of training athletes for elite-level performance.

The Plymouth contest counts as a tier one and two British Weight Lifting qualifying event for will follow their technical and competition rules and regulations.

Spectators are invited to watch the competition at Kings Road, on Saturday between 10am and 5pm.
