Young Tavistock hammer throwers impress at first Devon Open Series meeting of the season

YOUNG Tavistock hammer throwers Tegan Brown and Hazel Stead caught the eye at the opening Devon Open Series meeting of the season at Exeter on Sunday.

The pair both threw over 53 metres in the under-18 girls’ event.

English Schools’ champion Brown threw a big season’s best mark of 57.50m, which was just 16cm short of her PB, and which ranks her third in the current UK rankings.

Stead, who has also won an English Schools’ title, smashed her PB with a throw of 53.81m, which ranks her fifth in the UK this year and second first-year under-18.

Fellow Tavistock thrower Phoebe Milburn also threw a season’s best at Exeter. With the heavier hammer in the under-20 age group, she threw 48.36m, which ranks her fifth in the country.

There was also a good throw by their under-14 club colleague Charlotte Pestridge, who won her age group with 30.29m. She is currently ranked sixth in the UK with a season’s best of 33.65m.

Pestridge also won the under-14 girls’ discus with 21.39m.

On the track, City of Plymouth’s English Schools’ sprint champion Annabelle Fasuba made light of a -1.6 head wind to win the under-16 girls’ 200m in 24.27 seconds, with her club colleague Temi Akinbami second quickest in that age group with a PB time of 26.50 seconds to win her heat.

Akinbami also ran 12.93 seconds in the 100m, while Fasuba won the long jump with 4.97m.

There was a PB for Plymouth’s under-14 sprinter Harvey Slade in the 100m, despite running into a -2.4 wind. He clocked 12.91 seconds to win, and he also took victory in the 200m with 26.57 seconds.

Club colleague Bryan Oldfield won both the 100 and 200m events in the under-18 boys’ age group. He clocked 11.45 seconds in the 100m, with David Oldfield second in 11.66 seconds into a strong head wind, and he ran 23.06 seconds in the 200m.

Tavistock AC’s Daisy Wrigley won the under-14 girls’ 100m and 200m in 13.62 seconds and 28.99 seconds, respectively. She was also first in the long jump with 4.41m.

City of Plymouth’s Nia Harrdine-Cole took victory in both the under-20 200m and 400m. She ran 59.30 seconds for the one-lap race before clocking 26.37 seconds for the 200m.

Fellow Plymouth athlete Finley Eales was first under-16 boy in the 200m in 26.92 seconds.

Tavistock’s Katelyn Milburn won the under-20 triple jump with 10.12m, while Phoebe Milburn won that age group’s javelin event and Plymouth’s Robyn Summers took the honours in the under-18 girls’ 400m hurdles.

The second event in the series will be held at Braunton on Sunday, May 24.
