ATHLETICS ROUND-UP: Sweeney and Goodspeed impress over 1,200m at City of Plymouth’s Summer Middle Distance Series

LUCAS Sweeney and Elsie Goodspeed set the fastest times as City of Plymouth AC held their latest Summer Middle Distance Series on Tuesday evening at Brickfields.

After hosting mile races last month, this time the distance was 1,200m and the club had former English Schools’ cross country champion Kairn Stone helping to pace the final race.

Lucas Sweeney came home first in the final race, clocking a time of 3:41.0, with Elsie Goodspeed second and first female in 3:44.1.

Jack Penney was quickest under-12 boy in 3:57.9, with Olivia Walkerdine first under-14 girl in 4:04.0 and Evie Bolt first under-12 girl in 4:05.0.

Margot Goodspeed won the B race in 4:10.0, with Jacob Sweeney leading everyone home in the C race in 4:30.0 and Theia Jones (4:36.0) and Archie Alcock (4:55.0) winning the first two races.

The City of Plymouth Summer Middle Distance Series is being held in conjunction with Run Fit, Run Fast.

It was the second time in a few days that Lucas Sweeney and Jack Penney had impressed.

They had made the podium at Bristol Track Club’s 3k races at the weekend.

Penney won the under-12 boys’ race in 10.30 minutes, while Sweeney took third in the under-14 boys’ event in 9:48.2 minutes.

Meanwhile, English Schools’ champion and British record holder Annabelle Fasuba ran her first 100m and 200m races of the season at the Ken Trickey Great West Open at Exeter.

Fasuba had opened her season with a 300m run at Brickfields on Easter Sunday, clocking a UK-leading under-16 girls’ time of 39.00 seconds.

She also went straight to the top of the 100m and 200m rankings at the weekend.

The 14-year-old ran 11.83 seconds to win the 100m, with her City of Plymouth team-mate Temiloluwa Akinbami second in 12.92 seconds.

Fasuba then clocked 24.03 seconds to win the 200m.

There was an impressive under-18 girls’ hammer contest at Exeter, with Tavistock’s Hazel Stead setting a new PB of 50.93kg to take victory just ahead of her team-mate Tegan Brown, who threw 49.12m. Both Brown, who has thrown 55.90m this season, and Stead are in the UK’s top seven.

Isabelle and Charlotte Doney came third and fourth in the under-18 hammer event at Exeter with throws of 38.37m and 38.32m, respectively.

Charlotte Doney did win the under-18 girls’ discus with 31.49m, with Stead second with 31.43m.

Tavistock AC’s Freddie Whybrow smashed his PB to win the under-16 boys’ 800m in 2:03.80, while City of Plymouth’s Elsie Goodspeed took victory in the same age group’s girls’ race in 2:16.74.

Plymouth’s Evie Welsh won the under-14 800m in 2:30.39, while Evie Bolt took first in the under-12 600m in 1:53.39.

Tavistock’s Joe Wake won the under-18 boys’ 100m in 11.35 seconds, while Plymouth’s Josh Bloxham took victory in that age group’s 200m and 400m in 23.82 seconds and 51.92 seconds, respectively.

Tavistock’s Daisy Wrigley clocked 27.68 seconds to win the under-14 girls’ 200m, while City of Plymouth’s Ayla Orgacki ran 42.56 seconds to finish second in the under-16 girls’ 300m behind English Schools’ champion Isla Perry.

Plymouth’s Lexi Hollister and Tilly Day enjoyed another good battle in the under-14 girls’ 75m hurdles. Hollister took victory in a PB time of 13.19 seconds, with Day just behind in 13.24 seconds. Day did win the 200m hurdles in 33.50 seconds.

Erme Valley Harriers’ Isabella Trowell won the under-18 girls’ 100m hurdles in 15.73 seconds, while City of Plymouth’s Shara Ingleby triumphed in the under-12 girls’ 70m hurdles and shot.

Trowell had a good day as she also won the under-18 shot with a throw of 9.54m, with Tavistock’s Stead in second with 9.09m. Trowell also came second in the long jump with a leap of 5.12m.

Plymouth’s Temiloluwa Akinbami won the under-16 girls’ high jump with 1.50m.

Student athletes Rory Summers and Nicolas Maczugowski were in action at the Loughborough Open at the weekend.

Summers clocked 48.92 seconds to finish as second quickest under-20 athlete in the 400m, while Maczugowski ran a season-opening 55.40 seconds in the 400m hurdles.

Meanwhile, Tamar Trotters’ Luke Gibbons was first home in the Tavy 5k at the weekend.

He clocked 17.13 minutes, with Tavistock’s under-18 athlete Connor Duffin second in 17.31 minutes and Erme Valley’s Peter Allen third in 17.38 minutes.

Tamar Trotters’ Kat Darby was first woman in 21.02 minutes, with Elenor Ball and Julia Lefley second and third.
