RUGBY REPORTS: OPMs retain the Devon Junior Bowl by beating New Cross away

OPMs put their troubled league form behind them to retain the Devon Junior Bowl on Saturday against lower league New Cross.

The Old boys triumphed 24-19 at Five Lanes thanks to tries by Will Mills and Dan Adams, four penalties by the returning Matt Smale and a conversion by Mills.

“We were 24-14 up with about five minutes to go, but they scored a late try,” said OPMs head coach James Digweed.

“It was pretty close and we made it hard work for ourselves, but it was nice to get the win and retain the Devon Junior Bowl. We are happy.”

OPMs have lost their last five league games and have found themselves in a relegation battle with three games to play.

But Digweed said the Devon cup competition was a nice diversion from the league and he hopes it can help them re-find their form in Counties Two Devon.

“I think the boys needed a little break (from the league) and it has given us a little bit of confidence going into next week against Ivybridge,” he said.

“The boys feel a lot more confident now.”

He added: “We did not look like we were going to lose (on Saturday), but our standards can sometimes drop.

“But the boys were fantastic. There were some really good performances.

“I think our man of the match was Zac Mussa, who has been away at uni, and also Will Mills, who was fantastic again at nine.

“Matt Smale also played and he kicked four penalties including an amazing one from the touchline on halfway. He buried it – it was unreal.”

Meanwhile, Saltash II progressed through to the semi-finals of the Duchy Cup as they beat Bude II 60-8.

The Ashes travelled to north Cornwall with a largely experimental side given a high number of unavailable players, with the Ashes pulling a few old heads out of retirement and bringing in some of their senior colts players.

The Ashes started well and were on the board early with a try from wing Tom Knight.

Bude did cut the gap with a penalty goal, but from then on it was one way traffic with the visitors adding a further four tries in the first half from prop Simon Nance, flanker Bobby Rixson, who was making his first senior appearance, fly-half Nick Blake and winger Ethan Stone. Ollie Crawford added a conversion to make the half-time score 27-3.

The second half started much the same, with a solitary Bude try as opposed to a further five tries from the visitors.

Stone added a second, while number eight Devon Bennett-Murray capped a powerful performance with a touch-down. There were also tries for Crawford and replacements Dale Johnson and Ryan Thomas. Crawford and full-back Henry Taylor both added two conversions in the second period.
