GALLERY: English Schools’ champion Brown sets new PB as Tavistock host final Devon Open Series of the season

ENGLISH Schools’ hammer champion Tegan Brown improved her personal best on Sunday as her home Tavistock track hosted the final Devon Open Series meeting of the season.

Brown had only set a new PB a couple of weeks ago on her England debut at the SIAB International in Derby.

But she improved that at the weekend with a throw of 57.67m.

Brown is ranked second in the UK under-17 girls’ 3k hammer rankings and is ranked 21 in the all-time list. Brown also won the under-17 100m.

Her under-17 club colleague Hazel Stead was not far off her PB on Sunday as she threw 49.22m for second place.

Club team-mate Phoebe Milburn was also on form in the under-20 4k hammer with an effort of 49.36m, with fellow Tavistock athlete Louisa Hess second with 41.65m. Milburn also won the shot.

George Brown set a new PB in the under-17 boys’ hammer with a best of 40.64m. He also won the shot with 10.01m.

Josh Tyler (Tavistock) triumphed in the men’s shot, hammer and discus. He threw 14.86m in the shot, 43.34m in the hammer and 39.29m in the discus. Team-mate Owen Fileman won the under-20 discus with 38.25m.

Charlotte Doney, another Tavistock athlete, took victory in the under-17 girls’ discus with 30.46m and she also won the 200m in 27.71 seconds.

City of Plymouth’s Fred Werrett claimed the top honours in the under-15 boys’ javelin with a PB throw of 34.08m, with Tavistock’s Riley Brown second with 28.74m.

Mabel Maguire (Tavistock) claimed victory in the under-15 girls’ javelin with 26.63m, which was a PB, while Nell Maguire was second in the under-17 girls’ event with 28.01m.

On the track, City of Plymouth’s Nicolas Maczugowski won the under-20 men’s 100m and 200m. He clocked a PB of 11.18 seconds in the 100m and 22.36 seconds for the 200m.

There was a great battle in the under-17 sprint races between Plymouth’s Bryan and David Oldfield and Tavistock’s Joe Wake.

Just 0.1 of a second separated the three of them in the 100m, with Bryan Oldfield taking second in 11.20, behind Welsh athlete Finnley Roynon, who clocked a quick 10.83 seconds. David Oldfield was third in 11.23 and Wake coming fourth in 11.30 seconds.

In the 200m, Bryan Oldfield clocked 22.72 seconds to take the win, with David Oldfield setting a PB of 22.92 for second and Wake finishing third.

Tavistock’s Jack Wake was second in the under-15 100m in 13.17 seconds and he ran a PB of 27.51 to finish third in the 200m, with Plymouth’s Fred Werrett second in a PB of 27.31.

City of Plymouth’s Harvey Slade claimed the 100m and 200m double in the under-13 age group with runs of 13.22 and 27.28 seconds, respectively.

There was a PB for Alison Oldfield in the girls’ under-13 100m. She clocked 13.38 seconds to move into the UK’s top 40.

English Schools’ champion Isla Perry, from Totnes, showed her talent by winning the under-15 girls’ 100m in 12.70 seconds and the 300m in 41.80 seconds. Erme Valley’s Araliya Martin clocked 13.79 seconds as she finished third in the 100m.

City of Plymouth’s Taylan Jones finished first in the under-15 boys’ 300m in 40.97 seconds, with team-mate Finley Eales, who had already run the 3,000m, taking second in 41.66. Eales did come second in the 3,000m in 10:18.38 behind Tavistock’s Luke Scott-Tucker, who clocked 10.00.68. Tavistock’s Mark West (M50) clocked a PB of 10:30.36.

The 3,000m was dominated by former City of Plymouth twins Jacob and Ben Harrison, competing for Cornwall AC, who came first and second in 8:23.18 and 8:24.83.

Daniel Newman (City of Plymouth) and Caleb Gifford-Groves (Tavistock), who are both 800m specialists, showed their one-lap speed by claiming 400m victories.

Newman ran a season’s best time of 51.73 seconds to win the men’s race, while Gifford-Groves clocked a PB of 52.22 in the under-17 event.

Plymouth’s Nia Harradine-Cole won the under-20 women’s 400m in 59.38 seconds, with Tavistock’s Jasmine Gray first senior woman in a PB time of 60.90. Gray also won the 800m in 2:16.17.

Plymouth’s Elsie Goodspeed was first under-15 girl in the 800m in 2:17.61, while team-mate Evie Welsh won the under-13 race in 2:33.39. Erme Valley’s Dougal Buzza was first under-13 boy in 2:32.23.

Plymouth’s Robyn Summers won the 300m hurdles in 50.48, while team-mate Finley Bennett was first under-17 boy in the 400m hurdles in 63.21 seconds.

Erme Valley’s Isabelle Drew took victory in the under-15 girls’ high jump with 1.45m, while Tavistock’s Daisy Wrigley was first in the under-13 high jump with a PB of 1.30m.

Plymouth’s Hugo Darcy took first place in the under-13 boys’ long jump with 4.57m, while Tavistock’s Mabel Maguire won the under-15 girls’ long jump with 4.45m and club colleague Katelyn Milburn triumphed in the under-20 women’s triple jump with 10.13m.

There was also a quad event for under-11s which proved very popular.
