THERE were some impressive performances as Plymouth’s Brickfields track hosted the second Devon Athletics Open on Sunday.
There was an exciting men’s 800m race where City of Plymouth’s Joshua Blake timed his run perfectly to overtake Cornish athlete Jack Nancarrow on the final lap and win in 1:54.56.
Nancarrow came second in the PB time of 1:57.08, with Plymouth’s Daniel Newman third in 2:02.21.
There was an 800m PB for Tavistock’s in-form under-15 athlete Freddie Whybrow, who won that age category race in 2:10.84. City of Plymouth’s Taylan Jones was second in 2:13.24.
Plymouth’s Lucas Sweeney took victory in the under-13 boys’ 800m in 2:26.55, while club colleague Finley Bennett won the under-17 800m in 2:12.95. He also triumphed in the 400m beforehand in a PB time of 54.93 seconds.
Nia Harradine-Cole took top honours in the under-20 women’s 400m and 200m. She clocked 59.35 seconds for the one-lap event and the 200m in PB time of 26.53 seconds.
Plymouth team-mate Tyler Johnson had a good day. He won the men’s 100m and 200m and came second in the 400m. He ran 11.36 for the 100m, 23.08 for the 200m and 51.15 for the 400m.
Tavistock’s Luke Scott-Tucker was first under-15 in the 3,000m in a PB time of 9:39.60, while Erme Valley Harriers’ Luke Hayes was first under-17 in 9:38.50.
In the throwing events, Tavistock’s Hazel Stead won the under-17 hammer and discus. In the hammer, she threw 47.42m, while in the discus she recorded 28.10m.
Club colleagues Owen Fileman, George Brown and Louisa Hess also claim hammer victories. Fileman won the under-20 event with 46.27m, while Brown claimed a PB of 37.07m to top the under-17 competition and Hess triumphed in the under-20 women’s event with 36.27m.
City of Plymouth’s Brendon Schmidt was another thrower to catch the eye. He set a new PB in the under-15 javelin, which he won with 31.75m.
Tavistock Katelyn Milburn was first in the under-20 women’s triple jump with a season’s best mark of 10.50m, while Erme Valley’s Elliott Barrett won the under-15 triple jump with 9.74m.
Plymouth’s Hugo Darcy was first in the under-13 long jump.
Sunday’s event also offered athletes the chance to compete in a pentathlon competition. Erme Valley Harriers’ Isabella Trowell won the under-17 girls’ multi-eventer with a PB of 2,761 points, while team-mate Dougal Buzza was second in the under-13 boys’ pentathlon.
