ATHLETICS ROUND-UP: Tank and Smart make their mark at Comeback 5000, while Kudzia runs new PB in Brussels

CITY of Plymouth’s Poppy Tank and Tavistock Run Project’s Oliver Smart were among a high-class field at the Comeback 5,000 at Battersea Park.

Great Britain international Tank finished third in a close women’s 5,000m elite race in 16:05.46.

She finished just behind India Weir, who won in 16:03.27, and Lucy Jones, who was second in 16:03.92.

Smart smashed his PB in the men’s elite 5,000m. He finished seventh and first under-23 athlete in 13:45.18, which knocked nearly 30 seconds off his previous best.

At the Cornwall 5,000m Championships, Tamar Trotters’ Jacob Landers finished third in 15:21.4, while Plymouth Harriers’ Jack Dee was sixth in 15:41.1. Former City of Plymouth athlete Benjamin Marriott was first under-17 in 16:40.7.

City of Plymouth’s Adam Dingley competed at the BLCF Hurdles Fest at Chelmsford at the weekend. He clocked 14:48 seconds in a strong under-20 110m hurdles event.

His Devon team-mate Joshua Taylor did achieve the European U20 Championships qualifying time at that competition.

Also at Chelmsford, University of Plymouth’s Zechariah Cohen came second in the senior men’s 3,000m steeplechase in 9:34.04.

City of Plymouth’s Kinga Kudzia gained some international experience over the weekend by competing at the WACT Bronze EA meeting in Brussels.

Kudzia set a new PB in the 100m with a time of 11.83 seconds and clocked 24.31 seconds in the 200m.

At the BMC Meeting at Exeter on Tuesday night, City of Plymouth’s Josh Blake finished third in the A 800m race with a season’s best time of 1:55.47.

Fellow Plymouth athlete Taylan Jones was third under-13 boy with a 2:13.59 run, while Tavistock’s under-13 athlete Tristan Bigham ran a PB time of 2:18.67.

Tavistock’s Zoe Bigham also clocked a new PB, running 2:20.60 to finish as first under-15 girl.

Plymouth Harriers’ Jack Dee ran 4:06.30 for the 1,500m. He finished just behind Great Britain international Innes Fitzgerald, who ran a new PB of 4:05.14. City of Plymouth Holly Reid ran 4:53.32.

Away from the track, Erme Valley Harriers’ Chris Prall came fourth overall and first M40 at the Langstone Fell Race organised by Tavistock Run Project at Peter Tavy. The main race was won by Exeter Harriers’ Robin Daffron.

Dartmouth Runners’ Chris Perry was second M50, while Erme Valley Harriers’ Vicky Walker was third woman overall and team-mate Becky Prall was fourth and second F40.

In the junior races, Tavistock Eldon Young won the under-17 boys’ event, with Grace Gokhale taking the girls’ victory in that age group.

Olivia Walkerdine and Frankie Smith claimed the under-13 titles, while George Lake and Esme Prall were first under-11s.
