ATHLETICS ROUND-UP: Tavistock’s Gifford-Groves smashes his 800m PB at BMC meeting

A number of athletes from the region set eye-catching new personal bests at the BMC meeting in Street at the weekend, while others gained more high-class experience at the Loughborough International.

Tavistock’s under-17 athlete Caleb Gifford-Groves knocked nearly three seconds off his 800m best in Somerset, clocking an impressive 1:54.73. That ranks him in the UK’s top eight under-17 boys this year.

Club colleague Jasmine Gray also set a new best over two laps at Street. She finished fourth in the women’s race with a 2:13.78 run.

City of Plymouth youngsters Finley Eales, Elsie Goodspeed and Evie Welsh were also among those setting significant new PBs in the 800m.

Under-15 athlete Eales knocked three seconds off his previous best with a 2:15.39 run, while in the same age group, Goodspeed clocked 2:17.24, which ranks her in the UK’s top 35.

Team-mate Welsh ran 2:27.21, which puts her in the UK’s top 20 under-13s so far this season.

In the 1,500m, City of Plymouth’s Holly Reid ran 4:55.36.

City of Plymouth athletes Adam Dingley, Nicolas Maczugowski, Hanna Ulvede, Jacob Lamboll, Rory Summers and Kinga Kudzia all competed as guests at the Loughborough International on Sunday.

Dingley (U20) came second in the guest 110m hurdles race in a time of 14.49 seconds, while Maczugowski and Ulvede both came third in their guest 400m hurdles B races.

Maczugowski (U20) clocked 54.59 seconds in his heat, while Ulvede (U23) ran 63.33 in the women’s event.

Lamboll (U23) won the guest 400m C final in 48.60 seconds, while Summers (U20) was third in the B final with a time of 49.10 seconds.

Kudzia (U23) equalled her PB in the women’s 100m with a time of 11.90 seconds and set a new PB in the 200m with a 24.28 second run.
