MARIA Weymouth (Mid Devon CC) and Blake Pond (Nopinz) claimed top honours at the South West District 10-Mile Time Trial Championships on Easter Sunday, hosted by Plymouth Corinthian CC.
Racing on the fast S4/10 course near South Brent, riders were met with cold but calm early morning conditions as the sun rose over the Devon hills.
In the open category, Blake Pond stormed to victory with a commanding ride, joined on the overall podium by Lloyd Copp (Okehampton CC) in second, and Donald Brooks (Mid Devon CC) in third. Maria Weymouth seized victory in the women’s event, flanked on the podium by Tori Loze (Nopinz) in second and Fiona German (Mid Devon CC) in third.
In the road bike category, Sam Beaton (Plymouth Corinthian CC) set an early benchmark for the entire field, only bettered by the final few riders on time trial bikes.
In the women’s road bike competition, clubmate Becca Ryder delivered an impressive debut ride to take the win and the South West district title; making it a clean sweep for the host club in the road bike categories.
Mid Devon CC secured a well-deserved team prize, thanks to strong rides from Donald Brooks, Kevin Weymouth and Clive Vallance, underlining the club’s continued depth.
Attention in the South West region now turns to Kernow Racing Team’s hilly 10 near Padstow in Cornwall, with over 50 riders set to take part.
