WOMEN’S RUGBY: Ivybridge secure their first Championships victory, while Services and Saltash also claim wins

IVYBRIDGE claimed their first Championship South win on Saturday as they beat Trojans 48-12 away.

After defeats against Bath and North Bristol in their opening two games since their promotion, Ivybridge showed their try-scoring form in Southampton by crossing the whitewash eight times.

The game was tight in the first half, with both sides scoring two tries apiece.

But as the match went on Ivybridge dug deep and were rewarded with a number of late tries.

Lauren Dent and Hannah Lumley had scored first half tries for the Bridgers, with Beth Plumpton converting both as they lead 14-12 at the change of ends.

Plumpton managed to get two tries herself in the second period to go with further touch-downs from Sophie Lyon, Michaella Roberts, Hannah Mills and Abigail Smith.

The win has moved Ivybridge up to sixth in the Championship South standings.

They will continue their campaign when they host unbeaten Richmond at Cross-in-Hand on Saturday, October 31.

Devonport Services moved to the top of NC2 South West (West) with a hard-fought 12-5 away victory at Bude.

Lakaysha Pay scored a try for Services in the first half, which Amy Blaylock converted.

And then 10 minutes into the second period, Lola Roberts scored a decisive try for the visitors.

Services will visit Devon rivals Newton Abbot next Saturday.

In NC3 South West (West), Saltash opened their season with a 45-0 away victory at newcomers Plymouth Albion.

Albion battled hard and kept the score down in the first half, but Saltash’s strong runners started finding gaps in the second period.

In the same division, Plymouth Argaum were beaten 46-5 away at Redruth.

Argaum, like Albion, are still waiting for their first wins of the season.

The city teams in that division will not play again until November 1 when Saltash host Argaum and Albion entertain Wadebridge.
