SEVERAL Plymouth Combination players will be in action as Devon and Cornwall battle it out for the Tamar Cup at Redruth on Saturday (2.30pm).
The annual fixture is used by both counties to have a look at players ahead of May’s County Championship campaign.
Like in recent years, the counties have agreed to only select players from level five and below.
That means Cornwall have not picked first team players from Camborne or Redruth, which they will likely rely on in the County Championship.
Devon do have more clubs at level five and they did win back the Tamar Cup last year in wintery conditions at Ivybridge’s Cross-in-Hand ground.
Cornwall will be looking to regain it on home soil and they have handed a start to experienced Saltash back Ryan Cruickshanks, who will line-up on the wing.
Also in the starting line-up for Cornwall will be former Liskeard-Looe back-rower Adam Powell, who has previously captained the Plymouth Combination side.
The Devon squad features players from Plymstock Oaks, Ivybridge and OPMs.
Oaks’ Harvey Courtis, Ollie White and Lewis Paterson all start, as does Ivybridge’s Will Peakman, while Oaks’ Corey and Kieran Jamieson are on the bench, along with Ivybridge’s Henry Trudgill and OPMs half-back Matt Smale. Oaks’ Duncan Bibby is travelling reserve. Also starting for Devon will be former Tavistock scrum-half George Hillson.
Meanwhile, a Plymouth Combination team will be in action on Sunday at Moorlands Lane when they take on a joint Saltash and Buzancais side.
French club Buzancais and Saltash have a 50-year tradition of links and playing each other. They are playing a match on Saturday at Moorlands Lane (2pm), before they join together to play the Plymouth Combination on the Sunday (2pm).
