Tributes paid to Ivybridge RFC and Devon RFU stalwart Treve Mitchell

TRIBUTES have been paid to Ivybridge RFC and Devon RFU stalwart Treve Mitchell who has sadly passed away at the age of 84.

Treve had been involved with Ivybridge for nearly 50 years and was also on the Devon RFU committee for years, serving as both secretary and president of the county.

Ivybridge president Alan Knight said: “Treve’s service with our club has been monumental having commenced shortly after our founding in 1975 when, along with Carole his wife, he combined the demanding job of treasurer with countless other volunteer duties for many years.

“Later, although he gave Devon county may years of service including both as secretary and president, his heart always remained in Ivybridge.

“His touchline support of our teams, his presence on match days and social events has, quite rightly, endeared him to many members, young and old.

“We offer our sincere and heartfelt condolences to Carole and her family at this time of great pain and hope they might take some comfort in the knowledge that we all share in their grief as we have lost a much-loved and respected member of our club.”

Current Devon RFU president Paul Harris said: “Treve dedicated his life to the service and support of Ivybridge RFC, fulfilling the role of club treasurer beginning in the 1982-83 season, a position he held for more than three decades.

“His commitment extended far beyond Ivybridge; for Devon RFU, Treve served as honorary secretary from 2008 until his retirement at the end of last season, and he led as county president from 2017-2019.

“Treve’s contributions to Devon rugby were monumental, and his influence reached countless regional committees, earning him respect across the South West and beyond.

“Though deeply committed to Devon rugby, Treve always held close his Cornish roots, especially his beloved home town club of Camborne, where he also served as treasurer for several years.

“Treve’s wisdom and knowledge were unparalleled – he was the person everyone turned to for procedural guidance. His intellect and insight were truly boundless; what Treve didn’t know was simply not worth knowing. His steadfast dedication and unwavering support inspired so many of us on the countycommittee, and his legacy of excellence will continue to guide us.

“Despite his small stature, Treve had the heart of a lion. He faced his battle with cancer with extraordinary courage, dignity, and without complaint.

“Throughout his journey, Treve was blessed with the unwavering support of his beloved wife, Carole, who stood by his side through every county function and fixture, every cup final and gathering. Theirs was a partnership rooted in love and strength, and Carole’s presence was integral to all of Treve’s endeavours.

“Treve will be deeply missed on both sides of the Tamar. Our hearts and thoughts are with Carole, Andrew, Kevin, and their families during this difficult time.”
