PLYMOUTH Argyle boosted their hopes of staying in the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division by beating Lewes 2-1 at Home Park on Sunday.
It was a much-needed win for the Pilgrims, who had lost their previous three league and cup matches.
Although they do stay in the relegation zone, they are now only in there on goal difference and could move out of the bottom two if they can pick up some points away at AFC Wimbledon next weekend.
They got the perfect start on Sunday when Charlotte Whitmore fired them ahead in the 19th minute with a well timed run and finish.
And it got better for Argyle just before the break when Georgie Wilson tapped in a rebound after a shot by Ellie Sara.
Lewes did come out better for the second half and they pulled a goal back in the 63rd minute courtesy of Hannah Godfrey.
The visitors did throw everything at the Pilgrims in the final quarter, but Argyle’s defence held strong to pick up a vital three points.
In the South West Women’s Premier Division, Marine Academy Plymouth captain Samantha Drewery hit four goals for the second week running as her side enjoyed a big 8-0 home win over Poole Town.
League leaders Marine had also bagged eight goal seven days earlier against St Austell.
Against Poole, there was also a hat-trick for Carmen Morison, while Beth Overton was also on target for the second week running.
In South West Division One South, Plympton and Saltash United both kept up their unbeaten records.
Leaders Plympton enjoyed a 7-2 away victory at Weston-super-Mare, with Isabelle Firth hitting four goals and Dionne Igalawuye three.
Saltash United, meanwhile, had to work hard for a 2-0 victory over Honiton Town on the 3G pitch at Ivybridge College.
The Ashes took the lead in the 22nd minute when Nicola Champion beat the offside trap and beat the goalkeeper.
She then scored a penalty in the 34th minute after a Honiton defender produced a rash tackle from behind.
Honiton did shave the top of the crossbar before the break, but both teams struggled to get their passing games going.
There was not much to shout about in the second half. Honiton had plenty of possession, but the best chance fell to Saltash, who had an effort cleared off the line in the 67th minute.
