Heslop closes in on Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series title after victory in Turkey

PLYMOUTH’S Aidan Heslop has taken a massive step towards winning the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series title after claiming his fourth win of the year in Turkey on Sunday.

Heslop, who has finished as runner-up in the series for the past two seasons, convincingly triumphed at the penultimate stop in Antalya.

The 22-year-old former Plymstock School pupil scored 436.80 points at the weekend’s seventh leg, with Ukraine’s Oleksiy Prygorov taking second with 397.20 points and Italy’s Andrea Barnaba finishing third with 395.20 points.

Heslop’s major rivals for the series title, James Lichtenstein of the USA and Romania’s Constantin Popovici both faltered slightly in Turkey and had to settle for fifth and sixth place finishes respectively.

It means Heslop will take a 16-point lead into the final leg of the series in Australia in November.

“I’m feeling good,” said world champion Heslop after his latest win. “It was just an incredible event here. I mean, the crowd, the sun, the location, it all just worked out.

“I really thought James and Costa were going to add some real pressure today. I know they can do those dives for nines, but they didn’t quite hit them.”

He added: “Sixteen points ahead, that’s a nice lead at the minute. Why fix it when nothing’s broken. I’ll be doing the same thing that I just did, hopefully, and standing on top of that podium and taking that trophy at the end of the year.”
