THERE was a good turnout for the IntroTri Tavistock Triathlon held at Mount Kelly College on Sunday.
The event, known as The Squirrel, is part of the Cornish Triathlon Series and offered Olympic, sprint, super sprint and junior races.
Michael Buckley took overall victory in the Olympic Squirrel race in a time of two hours, three minutes and two seconds. That involved an 800m pool swim, a 36k bike ride and a 10k run.
He finished more than 11 minutes ahead of the second placed athlete, which was super vet John Wisner, with Tri Logic Cornwall’s Steve Farnell third.
Lucy Wyatt was first woman home in 2:29.38, with Cornwall’s super vet Emma Stepto taking second overall and first in her category in 2:44.42. Third woman was Rebecca Goldie.
John Steadman won the sprint race (Big Squirrel) in 1:11.30. That involved a 400m swim, a 18k bike ride and a 5.4k run.
David Crawford took the silver medal, just 17 seconds behind, with Mount Kelly’s Zach Davis third and Tamar Trotters’ Richard Ezra-Ham fourth.
Tamara Beach was first woman home, with Georgina Clarke second and Sarah Cooper third.
Cornish youngster Serena Clarke starred in the ‘Little Squirrel’ super sprint distance – 200m swim, 12.3k bike ride and a 2.5k run. She came second overall and first female in 47 minutes and 53 seconds.
Newquay & Par’s Lachlan Maclennan was first overall in that race in 47.13 minutes. Eddie Minns was third overall and second male, while Claudia Jones was fourth and second female.
The junior ‘Mini Squirrel’ was won by Jessica Griffith, who finished just three seconds ahead of Indya Aird, with William Springett third.
The Tavistock Triathlon came just seven days after the Plymouth Triathlon was held at Mount Edgcumbe.
Michael Buckley also took victory in the Olympic standard race in that event.
Plymouth Tri Club’s James Cartlidge won the sprint race at Mount Edgcumbe. Unfortunately, that event was held on the same morning as the Tamar 10k and Magnificent 7.
