GALLEY: Tamar Trotters’ Oldfield holds off Erme Valley’s Haynes to win the Saltash Half Marathon

OLIVER Oldfield held off a strong challenge from Erme Valley Harriers’ Ronnie Haynes to make sure Tamar Trotters had a home winner of the Saltash Half Marathon on Sunday.

For the third year running, the 13.1-mile race started and finished at Longstone Park and was tied in with the town’s May Fair.

Also, Tamar Trotters once again held a 5k race and fun run alongside the main event.

Unfortunately, the weather was not as kind as it has been in the previous two years and runners had to contend with heavy rain.

Oldfield clocked one hour, 19 minutes and 47 seconds for the tough course, beating M40 runner Haynes by just four seconds.

Third-place went to Tavistock Run Project’s Alex Peyton-Jones, also a M40 athlete, who finished in 1:20.30.

Lloyd Milbourn was fourth in 1:23.48 and Plymouth Musketeers’ Scott Mansfield was fifth in 1:24.00.

Erme Valley Harriers’ Alison McEwing was a dominant winner in the women’s race. She clocked 1:27.37 to win by nearly 13 minutes.

Second woman and first F45 was Ocean Lake Tri Club’s Claire Stone, who clocked 1:40.22, with Cornwall AC’s Emma Eva third (1:41.12), Delphine Tham was fourth (1:46.27) and Plymouth Harriers’ Sarah Robbins was fifth (1:47.49).

Plymouth Harriers did claim the women’s team prize, while Erme Valley were the first men’s team home.

City of Plymouth’s David Robinson was first M45, with Stuart Potter (M50), David Thomson (M60) and Garry Short (M65) also among the men’s awards.

Karine Gallais-Montgomery (F50), East Cornwall Harriers’ Sharon Daw (F55) and Plymouth Harriers’ Karen Eccles (F60) were among the women’s age group category winners.

Newquay & Par youngster Dylan Stevens retained the 5k title with a 17.45-minute run.

Second place went to City of Plymouth’s Benjamin Marriott (19.02), who held off his club colleagues Jacob Robinson (19.05), Daniel Salmon (19.33) and Steve Jones (19.40), who filled the rest of the top five placings.

Fellow Newquay & Par youngster Leah Rapson was first female in the 5k, clocking 21.10 minutes.

City of Plymouth junior Ayla Orgacki was second in 24.04 minutes, with Plymstock Road Runners’ Jane Ling third (24.24), Plymouth Harriers’ Nicola Noble (24.30) and RB Fitness’ Sarah Green fifth (26.09).
