McBeath delighted to end on a high with Devonport Services II

DEVONPORT Services II coach Andy McBeath was over the moon to win the Lockie Cup on Wednesday night in his final match in the role.

Services II overcame Saltash 40-29 to lift the historic Plymouth Combination trophy.

It meant all Services’ senior men’s sides have finished this season with some silverware, with the first team claiming the Regional One South West league title and the third team claiming the Pedrick Cup.

There could yet be more trophies on their way into the Devonport clubhouse as the thirds play in the David Butt Trophy today and the first team are in next week’s Devon Senior Cup final.

McBeath is retiring from the time-consuming role with the second team, but he will still be involved with the club.

“I have been doing this for a long time now – I have been involved since about 1985 – but this is a nice way to finish, us coming third in the league and winning the Lockie Cup and the ones getting promoted,” he said.

“Unfortunately, we lost last Saturday in another cup final, but it has still been a successful season.

“Without doubt the young lads coming through are fantastic.”

He added: “I just think it is now time for me to pack in. I have grandchildren and with my job I work away so it’s a lot of commitment on a weekend, but it’s good to finish on a high.

“Unfortunately, we are almost victims of our own success with Ben (Russell) and Rikki (Bentham) as when you get that many people training you need someone to take a bit more serious interest.

“But I will still be around local rugby. I am the discipline officer at the club, but with us going up we are going to need more volunteers. I think that is key.”

McBeath thought the Lockie Cup final, which saw Services II score six tries and Saltash five, was a great advert for Plymouth rugby.

“It was a great spectacle for local rugby and that is what it’s all about,” he said.

“Our game and the one before (Old Techs v Oaks II) were both great spectacles and shows there is a good future for local rugby around here.”
