PLYMOUTH’S Aidan Heslop finished as runner-up in the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series for the second year running.
Heslop went into the final stop in Auckland, New Zealand, still with an outside chance of snatching the title away from leader Romanian Constantin Popovici.
However, 35-year-old Popovici overcame a slow start at a windy Waitemata Harbour to win the final leg and claim the series title.
Heslop, who had claimed two victories and two podium places in the opening five legs of the series, had to settle for fourth in Auckland, but it was enough to finish as runner-up overall.
He said: “It’s been a tough season with its up and downs, but ultimately I’ve come out as the second best cliff diver in the world.
“I have really pushed my limits this season and am so proud of what I’ve accomplished.”
Heslop will now focus on next month’s World Aquatic Championships in Doha where he will be representing Great Britain.
