WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Home disappointment for Argyle, but wins for Marine Academy, Saltash and Horrabridge

PLYMOUTH Argyle suffered a disappointing 4-0 home defeat to Oxford United in the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division at Coach Road on Sunday.

Oxford did the damage in the first half as they took a 3-0 lead into the break thanks to goals from Zoe Barratt (2) and Isabelle Cook.

Barratt completed her hat-trick after the break for fourth-placed Oxford.

Despite the loss, Argyle stay in ninth placed, eight points clear of the relegation zone.

In the South West Women’s League Premier Division, second-placed Marine Academy Plymouth bounced back from their loss to leaders Bristol Rovers last weekend by beating St Austell 3-1.

Cameron Morison, Samantha Drewery and Megan Boulton scored Marine Academy’s goals in a match that saw Beth Overton make her comeback from a long-term injury.

In the same division, Liskeard Athletic were beaten 5-0 at home by Forest Green, who had Rhian Robbins (2), Annie Martin, Victoria Taylor and Hattie Jones scoring for them.

Saltash United returned to the top of the South West Western Division with a 1-0 home win over Feniton.

Teenage debutant Millie Everson scored a stoppage-time goal to secure the Ashes the victory.

In the Devon Women’s League South & West Division, leaders Horrabridge continued their winning run with a 6-1 home success over Shaldon.

Kerry Gibbings (2), Kirsty Jones, Carleigh Boyce, Leah Parnell-Moses and Heidi Davies were Horrabridge’s scorers.

Unbeaten SB Oak Villa’s game against Plainmoor was postponed as the Torbay side could not raise a side.

Bottom two sides Hunters District and Tavistock both enjoyed their best results of the season.

Hunters lost 4-1 at home to Lakeside Athletic, with Eleanor Cranch scoring the home side’s only goal.

Meanwhile, newcomers Tavistock will have taken lots of encouragement out of a 6-1 away defeat to third-placed Paignton Villa.

At half-time the match was 3-1 to the home side, with Ellice Bushell scoring a 14th minute penalty for the hosts before Kayleigh Barker and Lawren Bowden added further goals for them, with Beth Davey firing in for Tavistock from inside the box.

After the interval Bowden and Barker (2) added further goals for Paignton.

In the Cornwall Women’s Football League Division One, Saltash Borough were beaten 5-1 away at leaders St Agnes, while in Division Two, Callington Town triumphed 6-3 away at Biscovery, with Chloe Yorath bagging four and Tamsin Elliott and Anya Lawrence also on the scoresheet.
