Saltash II were knocked out of the Duchy Senior Cup by their Wadebridge counterparts at Moorlands Lane on Saturday.
The Bridgers’ second string triumphed 57-30 over their Counties Three Cornwall rivals in an entertaining cup match watched by a decent crowd.
Fly-half Lewis Stuart did score an impressive 20 points for the home side, but it was not enough to threaten league high-flyers Wadebridge.
Saltash II will now drop into the Duchy Senior Shield where they will play Bude II, who were hammered 88-7 by higher league Redruth II on Saturday.
The Ashes side did make great start with Stuart kicking a penalty in the fifth minute, but straight from the restart Wadebridge used their powerful forwards to score next to the posts.
Stuart did cut the gap to one point with another penalty on 11 minutes and it got better for the Ashes two minutes later when a kick forward caused major problems in the visiting defence and Stuart picked up to score on the right and put his side 11-7 in front.
But in the final 20 minutes of the first half, Wadebridge, playing down the slope first half, took control of the tie with three tries, two of which were converted, to give them a 33-11 half-time lead.
Six minutes into the second period, the visitors, with their forwards impressing, extended their lead with another converted try.
But then Saltash II got back into the game with tries by Colm Rich and Stuart on the left to close the gap to 40-23.
The hosts needed to score next, but Wadebridge took the sting out of their comeback with two tries in two minutes.
Kieran Hurrell scored with five minutes to go in the left corner but the final word went to Wadebridge after a turnover.
Hez Crane (2), Ollie Derry (2),Josh Anderson(2), Kiefer Stawksi, Henry Tucker and Jude Evans scored tries for the visitors, who had fly-half Harvey Redditch kicking six conversions.
