MOUNT Kelly, Plymouth Leander, Dartmoor Darts and Devonport Royal all picked up gold medals at the Swim England Summer Meet in Sheffield.
In total the four clubs claimed 30 medals between them at the event at Ponds Forge. That followed on from success for the region at the British Summer Championships in Glasgow the previous week.
Dartmoor Darts’ head coach Matthew Henry showed his swimmers how to do it by winning gold in the senior men’s 50m butterfly. Henry, uncle of Great Britain junior international Cameron Williams who claimed three silver medals at the recent European Youth Olympic Festival, clocked a personal best time of 25.04 seconds.
Williams, after his success in Baku, demonstrated that he is not just a breaststroke expert by winning bronze medals with PB times in the 15-year-old boys’ 50m freestyle (25.10) and 50m backstroke (28.59). He was edged out for silver in the one-length backstroke event by team-mate Fritz Dietz (28.51).
Hollie Steer made it a successful meet for the Darts with a silver medal on the senior women’s 50m breaststroke with a PB of 33.69 seconds.
Mount Kelly led the way in Sheffield with 16 medals, including four gold.
Holly Robinson claimed their first title of the meet in the 14-year-old girls’ 200m breaststroke in a time of 2:42.39.
Also winning golds were Drew McGregor, Caitlyn Fry and James Bartley.
McGregor’s came in the 16-year-old boys’ 200m breaststroke, while Fry won the 15-year-old girls’ 200m butterfly. Bartley enjoyed a great meet. He won the 16-year-old boys’ 200m IM and also took silver medals in the 100m butterfly and 400m freestyle.
Another multi Mount Kelly medallist was Ben Harrison, who picked up two silvers and a bronze in the senior 200m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 100m breaststroke. Joseph Russell won bronzes in the 17-year-old boys’ 400m IM and 400m freestyle. There were also silver medals for Tymofi Chemeryk (15 year-old boys’ 800m) and Sebastian Williams (MC, 50m butterfly), while Adam Nash (16 year-old boys’ 100m breaststroke), Sam Peck (senior men’s 400m IM) and Jake Blake (16-year-old girls’ 50m butterfly) picked up bronzes.
Plymouth Leander, whose leading swimmers had won 12 golds at the British Summer Championships the week before, also enjoyed more success in Sheffield.
Amy Pemberton led the way for them with a gold and a bronze medal. Her gold came in the senior 200m freestyle (2:05.56), while she picked up bronze in the 400m freestyle.
There was a gold medal for Connor Robinson in the 16-year-old boys’ 50m butterfly with a 26.22 second swim.
Freddy Ashley-Sparks won a silver and bronze medal in the 17-year-olds’ 200m butterfly and 100m butterfly, respectively.
Sophie de Groot claimed a silver medal in the 15-year-old girls’ 50m butterfly, while Claire Huellou (14-year-old girls’ 50m breaststroke) and Blythe Kinsman (12/13-year-old girls’ 50, butterfly) were bronze medal winners.
Also winning a gold medal at the meet was Devonport Royal’s Abigail Daly. The 14-year-old swam a PB time of 2:41.33 to triumph in the women’s MC 200m freestyle.
A brilliant swim, and Pb, which earned Abi a gold in the 200 free. She also earns a place in the 100 fly final, joining Andrew who has a lane in the men’s 100 fly final. Both will return to the pool just after 18.00 tonight pic.twitter.com/yCecMT73ZA
