Morton and Wells to start for Cornwall, while Coats and Toogood get Devon chance

SALTASH players Will Morton and Lewis Wells will make their first County Championship starts for Cornwall on Saturday when play Hertfordshire at Bishop Stortford.

The pair missed out on the chance to feature at the start of Cornwall’s campaign due to Saltash’s involvement in the RFU Senior Vase final at Twickenham.

But with the Duchy without a host of players for this weekend’s long trip, including Plymouth Albion’s Matt Shepherd due to injury, the pair get their chance.

Morton will start on the right-wing in place of the unavailable Tom Notman, while Wells comes in at blindside flanker in a Duchy team missing 13 players from the 22 that featured against Devon last weekend.

Also in the squad is Liskeard-Looe’s Angus Hodges, who is named among the replacements.

Cornwall are unable to reach Twickenham after narrowly losing 20-19 last weekend. However, Hertfordshire could still reach the final if they were to beat the Duchy and Gloucestershire lose to Surrey.

Devon, meanwhile, will hand starts to Plymstock Albion Oaks forward Tim Coats and Ivybridge backs Jay Toogood, Matt Grieveson and Billy Pinkus when they travel to Aylesford to play Kent for their final group match.

Fellow Ivybridge players George Wilson, Ben Watts and Charlie Briant keep their places in the starting line-up, while Wes Vermingle and Ben King are on the bench, along with Plymstock’s Aiden Taylor.

Devon need to win to guarantee their place in the top division of the County Championship, with relegation decided over a two-year period.

Their hopes of staying up were boosted massively last week by their narrow win over Cornwall. That one-point victory could yet be the difference between staying up or not, with Surrey now having the poorest record over the past two seasons.
