WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Argyle produce four-star display on their travels, plus FA Cup joy for Plympton

PLYMOUTH Argyle claimed their first FAWNL Southern Premier Division away victory of the season as they beat Lewes 4-0 at the Dripping Pan stadium on Sunday.

Lewes had not been beaten on their own patch for more than a year, but third-placed Argyle comfortably picked up three points in East Sussex.

They went in front after just 10 minutes when home defender Ylenia Priest diverted the ball into her own net after a good run and cross by Tianna Teisar.

And the Pilgrims doubled their lead in the 31st minute with a fine left-footed shot from the edge of the box by Ellie Noble.

Argyle’s final two goals came in the closing stages with Teisar heading home a Charlotte Whitmore free-kick and then Phoebie Poole firing in from just inside the area.

The Greens have only lost one of their opening five games of the season – a 2-0 reverse at second-placed Watford – and they are the league’s top scorers so far.

In FANWL Division One South West, newly-promoted Marine Academy Plymouth were narrowly beaten 2-1 away at Bournemouth Sports.

The match was all square at the break, with Emily Phillips netting for the home team and Marine Academy captain Sam Drewery scoring her 300th goal for the club.

But Bournemouth scored a second just after the interval courtesy of Emma Whall and Marine Academy could not find an equaliser.

In the Women’s FA Cup, there was joy for Plympton, but disappointment for Saltash United and Saltash Borough.

Plympton overcame Longfleet Lioness 4-0 at Manadon with a controlled performance.

The home side took the lead in the 17th minute when Isabelle Firth got through and calmly beat the Longfleet goalkeeper, who had brilliantly denied Plympton 10 minutes earlier.

Bella Brown-Tunnell then doubled their lead in the 32nd minute with an impressive run and shot from the left.

She then added her side’s third from a corner in the 70th minute before the influential Firth scored her second just before the end.

Plympton’s reward for their win is a home game against Swindon Town on October 5, while Marine Academy Plymouth have been handed an away trip to Bristol Rovers.

Saltash United and Saltash Borough were unable to join them in the third round qualifying.

Saltash United were beaten 2-0 at home by Yeovil Town on Sunday, while Saltash Borough went down 3-1 at home to Feniton.

SB Oak Villa opened their Devon Premier Division away campaign with a 1-1 draw at Crediton.

Mia Dulling had fired them ahead in mid-Devon, but the home side snatched a point with a goal from Daisy Sheppard midway through the second half.

In the Devon South & West Division, Elm United overcame Lakeside Athletic 22-0 away. Crystal-Mae Pollock netted nine of United’s goals, with Ella Parrott just one behind with eight. Mia-Mae Lawrence scored four times, while Maisie Lovell was also on the scoresheet.

Angel Goucher scored twice as Plymouth True Blues beat Tavistock 3-1 at home. Jessie Welch scored True Blues’ other goal, while Lou McLeod scored for Tavistock, who had taken the lead.

Plymouth Marjon enjoyed a thrilling 6-4 home win over Elm Fusion. The match had been level at 2-2 at half-time, but Marjon just edged it in the second period.

Robyn Hearn (2), Beatriz Almeida, Phoebe White, Sam Cox and Siona Goddard scored for Marjon, with Iola Hewing (2), Emily Mousley and Lauren Hewing on target for Elm Fusion.

Elsewhere, Drake FC were forced to hand Plainmoor an away walkover.
