WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Plymouth Argyle make an impressive start to their new league season

PLYMOUTH Argyle made an impressive start to their 2025-26 FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division season on Sunday at Home Park.

The new-look Greens beat last season’s runners-up Hashtag United 3-0, with summer signings Paris Dalton and Phoebie Poole both scoring on their league debuts.

After narrowly escaping the drop last year, Argyle’s women’s team has been transformed over the summer, with the arrival of new head coach Marie Hourihan and a host of new faces.

And the team took just 16 minutes of the 2025-26 campaign to make their mark with former Derby County player Dalton scoring at the second attempt after Hashtag goalkeeper Frankie Agel had initially saved her first effort.

It got better for the Greens in the 30th minute when a Charlotte Whitmore corner was flicked into the net by a visiting defender to make it 2-0.

And just before half-time, Argyle made it 3-0 with former Oxford United attacker Poole linking up with Paris before slotting the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

The Pilgrims were not able to add to their tally in the second half, but they will have been delighted to have picked up three points from their opening match. They will now visit Ivybridge on Thursday night for a cup match against National League newcomers Marine Academy Plymouth.

Marine Academy were left frustrated after they went down 2-0 in their opening National League Division One South West fixture at Keynsham Town.

The home side went in front after 16 minutes with a goal from Jade Radburn.

It was still 1-0 as they game went into the final 20 minutes, but as Marine Academy pushed for an equaliser, they were punished on the break with substitute Georgia Galley scoring Keynsham’s second.

Meanwhile, Saltash United and Plympton continued their preparations for their campaigns with a pre-season friendly at Kimberley Stadium.

The sides had only met the previous week, with the Ashes winning that one 3-2, but this weekend it was the turn of Plympton to take the spoils, winning a tight match 1-0.
