CITY of Plymouth’s Nicolas Maczugowski opened his outdoor season with a sub-50 second 400m run at the Great West Open/Ken Trickey Memorial Open Meeting at Exeter on Sunday.
The hurdles specialist clocked 49.98 seconds for the one-lap flat race to ease to victory in the under-20 event, which ranks him inside the UK’s top 15 in that age category.
There were also impressive runs from Tavistock athletes Caleb Gifford-Groves and Freddie Whybrow, who are also in the top 15 of their age group rankings.
Under-17 athlete Gifford-Groves ran 1:57.75 for the 800m, which was just 0.29 of a second of his personal best, while under-15 runner Whybrow, ran 4:31.83 for the 1,5000m, having clocked 4:25.10 just the previous week in better conditions.
Whybrow’s team-mate Jack Anthony was second in the under-15 1,500m at Exeter with a 4:53.95 run.
Another Tavistock athlete Thomas Hennessey dominated the under-15 800m, claiming victory in 2:12.55, while club colleague Jasmine Gray won the senior women’s 800m in 2:18.74.
Erme Valley Harriers’ Isabella Trowell had an impressive day, winning the under-17 girls’ 80m hurdles and shot and coming second in the triple jump. She clocked 12.91 seconds for the hurdles, threw 9.55m in the shot and leaped 10.36m in the triple jump.
City of Plymouth’s junior international Nubia Evans-Shields won the under-20 discus event with a throw of 40.80m, with Tavistock’s Phoebe Milburn and Louisa Hess second and third.
Hammer specialist Phoebe Milburn also came second in the shot with 9.03m and third in the javelin, with her sister Katelyn taking second in that event. Katelyn did win the under-20 triple jump with 10.20m.
Tavistock’s Evie Palmer won the under-17 girls’ javelin with 32.89m. She had also thrown 35.55m the day before at Par, which ranks her in the top 15 of the early UK rankings.
City of Plymouth’s Andreas Isaias won the under-20 200m in a wind-assisted 22.42 seconds, while he came second in the 100m with a PB of 11.31 seconds.
Club colleague Lucas Sweeney won both the under-13 800m and 200m, while Robyn Summers came second in the under-17 girls’ 300m hurdles with a 50.71 second run.
