WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Argyle fall back into the relegation zone, but Saltash unbeaten keep run going

PLYMOUTH Argyle have fallen back into the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division relegation zone after losing 4-0 at home to fourth-placed Watford.

The match was played at Tavistock’s Langsford Park on Sunday and the Hornets were always in command.

The visitors took the lead in the 14th minute when Ellie Head tapped in a rebound after Jessie Gale had hit the woodwork.

Gale then doubled Watford’s lead on the stroke of half-time when she rounded Argyle goalkeeper Lily Felgate, who had pulled off a couple of great saves.

The game was sealed with two goals within the space of two minutes midway through the second half.

First, Bianca Baptiste scored her first goal since rejoining the Hornets before captain Megan Chandler scored a stunning 30-yard effort into the top corner.

Afterwards Argyle manager Ryan Perks said: “We were probably not good enough with the ball. That is an area we need to improve on and improve on quickly.”

Marine Academy Plymouth stay top of the South West Women’s Premier Division, despite a frustrating 2-2 draw away at eighth-placed Pucklechurch.

Marine had twice gone in front with goals from Kelsey Blight, but the home side cancelled her efforts out with strikes by Amy Jefferies and Ilarna Nche.

In South West Division One South, Saltash United kept their unbeaten run going with a 3-0 away victory at Helston Athletic.

Oliver Ramsey, Liv Lennox and Morgan Friend scored the Ashes’ goals down on the Lizard Peninsula.

Signal Box and Horrabridge Rangers both progressed to the next round of the Devon Senior Women’s Cup on Sunday.

Signal Box overcame Devon North & West Division leaders Fremington 2-1 at Manadon.

All the goals in that tie came in the first half, with Melanie Finch and Addy Hitt scoring for Signal Box and Sandra Hughes netting for Fremington.

Horrabridge eased through to the next round by beating their neighbours Tavistock 14-0 on the town college’s 3G pitch.

Toni Willmott bagged five goals for Rangers, with Leah Parnell-Moses and Leesa Grainger both hitting two and Vicky Jasper, Jess Oaten, Kirsty Jones, Meg Hoskins and Kerry Gibbing also getting on the scoresheet.

But there was disappointment for SB Oak Villa, who went down 1-0 away at Paignton Villa, while Hunters District handed Braunton a home walkover.

Saltash Borough progressed in the Cornwall Premier Division Cup with a 2-0 home victory over Bodmin at Saltmill. Rachel Finch and Molly Gill scored for Borough.
