PLYMOUTH Argyle and Marine Academy Plymouth were both knocked out of the Women’s FA Cup at the second round stage by West Country rivals on Sunday in horrible weather.
Argyle were beaten 5-1 at Home Park by their National League Southern Premier Division rivals Exeter City, while Marine Academy went down 5-0 at Manadon to higher league Bristol Rovers.
Exeter had taken a 1-0 lead into the break against their Devon rivals with a headed goal by Sophie Gillies, who got the final touch ahead of Mollie Taylor.
And the Grecians took hold of the game in the second period with four further goals.
Gillies added a second on 51 minutes from close range before Sarah Stacey bagged two and Georgie Barbour-Gresham netted their fifth.
Argyle did score a consolation goal in injury-time courtesy of Charlotte Whitmore.
At Manadon, Marine Academy put up a good fight against National League Division One side Bristol Rovers, but the visitors scored three late goals.
Meg Jarvis was Rovers’ star player with four goals.
The match had to be held up for a lengthy spell mid-way through the second half when the game was 2-0 due to a head injury to visiting player Tamzin Hayward, who did go to hospital to be checked out before being given the all-clear.
All other matches around the regional fell foul to the weather.
