Heslop moves to the top of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series standings after win in Montreal

PLYMOUTH’S Aidan Heslop moved to the top of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series standings after claiming his third victory of the season in Montreal on Sunday.

Heslop produced two final great dives to take victory by more than 37 points with a massive total score of 475.8 points.

Both his final two dives scored more than 150 points each.

He went into the weather delayed final round trailing his big rival Constantin Popovici by 0.3 of a point, but he produced a stunning forward four somersaults three-and-a-half twists pike, earning 9.0 scores from the judges to take the win after a nerve-wracking wait to see if his Romanian rival could match his score.

“Only 0.3 separated us going into the last round,” said Heslop.

“I knew Costa needed a really good dive, but I know he can do that, so I was definitely nervous.

“But as soon as he hit the water, I knew it wasn’t quite good enough so I was able to start celebrating pretty early with Molly (Carlson) and our families.”

Heslop’s partner Carlson also claimed victory in the women’s event in her home city.

“We have been here once before with us both winning in Boston last year,” said Heslop. “But to do it here was really something special.”

With just two stops left of the series, Heslop, who took second place at the last round in Oslo, leads the standings by four points, with American James Lichtenstein second and Popovici third.

“It is really neck and neck between me Costa and James,” said Heslop, who has finished as runner-up in the series for the past two years.

“It will be pretty stressful, but I have put myself in a good position for these last two events and hopefully I can stay on top over these last two events of the season.”
