Devon’s men’s and women’s teams looking for Twickenham glory

DEVONPORT Services, Plymstock Oaks, Ivybridge, Tavistock and Marjon University will all be represented when Devon’s men’s and women’s team play at Twickenham tomorrow.

The men’s side are taking on the North Midlands in the Bill Beaumont Division Three County Championships final at 1pm, while the women play Cumbria two hours earlier in the Gill Burns Division Three County Championship final.

Eight Services players are in the men’s side. Rikki Bentham, Aiden Taylor, Andy Pond, James Hocking and Shaun Crawford all start, with Richard West, Matt Gregory and Liam Jarvis on the bench.

Oaks’ Ollie White and Corey Jamieson start, as does Tavistock’s Launceston-bound scrum-half George Hillson after he impressed in their semi-final against Hertfordshire.

Ivybridge front-rower Henry Trudgill is among the replacements, while former Ivybridge players Mitch Pinkus and Nathan Reeves are also in the side.

Devon, coached by Dan Parkes and Lewis Paterson, will possibly start as favourites given their results so far.

Devon hammered Hertfordshire 43-10 in their semi-final to secure their place at Twickenham, while they beat Berkshire 31-19 away and Dorset & Wiltshire 68-43 at home in their group games.

North Midlands, whose team is built around players from Bromsgrove, Stourbridge and Old Halesonians, just edged out Dorset & Wiltshire 32-31 at home in their semi-final and beat Durham 35-17 and Notts, Lincs & Derbyshire 38-7 in their group games.

In the women’s team, Ivybridge winger Charleigh Hopkin will start and is vice-captain, while there is also a start for Oaks’ Zelah Morgan.

The replacements include Ivybridge’s former Tavistock and Services player Hannah Lumley and Marjon’s Chloe Huxter.

Devon will not be totally sure what to expect from Cumbria as the sides have never met before.

Cumbria’s team is drawn from players at seven different clubs, although the bulk of their team play for either Kendal, Carlisle, Keswick and Workington.

In their group games, Devon beat Sussex 41-19 at home, Dorset 7-0 at home and Middlesex 12-0 away.

Cumbria overcame Essex 24-22, Oxfordshire 97-0 and Staffordshire 50-28.

Both the women’s and men’s game will be shown live by the RFU on their website HERE.
