WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Argyle bounce back from cup disappointment to earn an away draw, plus wins for Liskeard and SB Oak Villa

PLYMOUTH Argyle dug deep with a depleted squad to secure a 1-1 draw away at Billericay Town on Sunday in the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division.

Katie Dickson scored a penalty in the 78th minute to secure them a share of the points in their penultimate fixture which came just two days after narrowly losing the Devon Premier Cup final 2-1 to Exeter City at Coach Road.

On Friday evening they went 2-0 down to the Grecians, with Zoe Watkins firing Exeter ahead in the 10th minute before Sophie Gillies headed them further ahead early in the second half.

But Argyle piled on the pressure and Ellie Sara pulled one back from the penalty spot following a handball.

The Pilgrims went looking for an equaliser, but it just would not come.

They then had to pick themselves up for the long trip to Billericay on Sunday.

They were not able to travel with a full bench and were missing a number of key players.

Argyle went behind in first half injury-time when Maddie Biggs scored a fine volley for the Essex side.

But despite playing their second game within less than 48 hours, the Pilgrims battled hard and after Charlotte Whitmore was brought down 12 minutes from time, Dickson stepped up to slot home the penalty which earned her team a hard-earned away point.

Liskeard Athletic came from behind to beat Helston Athletic 3-1 at Launceston to retain the Cornwall Cup on Sunday.

The Blues went in at half-time 1-0 down after Eve Moore had scored in the 44th minute for Helston.

But Liskeard took control of the final after the interval. Chloe Williams equalised before Grace O’Leary and Tiana Campbell scored further goals to secure them the county trophy.

Saltash United narrowly missed out on reaching the South West League Divisional Cup as they went down 2-1 away at Poole Town in the semi-finals on Sunday.

The Ashes were missing a host of players and had to travel to Dorset with just a squad of 12. They battled hard but just could not sneak a win. Nicola Champion scored their only goal on the day.

In the Devon Premier Division, leaders Plympton were handed a home walkover by Crediton United.

In Devon South & West, SB Oak Villa took a major step to claiming the league title by beating second-placed Horrabridge Rangers 4-0 at Manadon on Sunday.

Oak Villa did all the damage in the first half with Rachel Finch, Becky Richards, Kelsey Blight and Victoria Jasper scoring goals.

Oak Villa, unbeaten in the league this season, are now five points clear of Horrabridge with a game in hand. The sides will meet again at Horrabridge on May 5.

Elsewhere in Devon South & West, Elm United beat Paignton Villa 5-0 away, Signal Box drew 0-0 at home with Shaldon Villa, while Lakeside Athletic lost 3-1 at home to Plainmoor, with Abigail Cleaver scoring their goal.

In the Cornwall Division Two, Callington Town lost 4-2 at home to Redruth United with Harriet Hall scoring both their goals.
