PLYMOUTH Argyle paid for a poor first half as they were beaten 4-2 by Rugby Borough at Manadon on Sunday in the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division.
The Pilgrims found themselves 4-0 down at the break with Angelina Nixon, Nick Potts, former Argyle player Lily Greenslade and Ebony Wiseman scoring first-half goals for the visitors.
But Argyle cut the lead straight after the interval when Ellis Sara fired in following a good run by Mia Endacott, back in the Argyle team after helping England U17s win the MIMA Cup in Spain.
The home side continued to press and they got a second goal in the 78th minute when Imogen Crawford headed home, but they were unable to add to that.
Their defeat has seen them drop down one place to eighth in the table, but they are 11 points clear of the relegation zone.
In the South West Women’s League Premier Division, Liskeard Athletic also paid for a poor opening 45 minutes as they lost 7-1 at Forest Green Rovers.
Chloe Williams did score early in the game for Liskeard, but fourth-placed Rovers took a 4-1 lead into the interval and then added three more in the second period.
There was penalty shoot-out agony for unbeaten Devon South & West Division leaders SB Oak Villa in the Devon Senior Cup semi-final.
They drew 2-2 with higher league Fremington at Tor Bridge on Sunday but lost out on reaching the final on spot-kicks.
The visitors had led 2-0 at the break thanks to goals from Marine Worby and Amy Slaney, but Oak Villa really came out fired up for the second half and almost instantly pulled a goal back thanks to a fine strike by Kelsey Blight.
Rachel Finch they scored a stunning goal to pull them level before she later had to go off with a hamstring injury.
Oak Villa dominated the second half but just could not find a winning goal and they were then left with a mountain to climb after missing their opening two penalties. They did score with their next two but Fremington only missed one, so they triumphed 4-2 in the shoot-out to reach the final.
In the Devon South & West Division, Elm United scored four first half goals as they triumphed 4-2 away at Plymouth Marjon.
Hayley Ranachan fired in Elm’s first, which was then followed by two from Toni Lunt and then one for Lauren Hewings. Morgan Friend and Abigail White scored for Marjon.
In the same division, Tavistock were beaten 8-0 away at Plainmoor.
In Cornwall League Division One, Saltash Borough triumphed 2-1 against Bodmin at home thanks to goals from Chloe Moore and Samantha Burnham, while in Division Two, Elowen Strong scored all four of Callington Town’s goals as they lost 5-4 away in a thriller at Redruth United.
