Tank is part of Great Britain’s team that won gold at the European Cross Country Championships

CITY of Plymouth’s Poppy Tank impressed again in a Great Britain vest as she helped her country win a team gold medal at the European Cross Country Championships in Brussels.

British steeplechase champion, who has competing at her fourth European Cross Country Championships, finished 11th in the senior women’s 9km race in Belgium, which improved on her 13th spot last year.

She finished strongly in the tough, muddy race at Laeken Park where Great Britain had six athletes finish in the top 20 as they easily won team gold.

Abbie Donnelly finished third, with Jess Warner-Judd fifth, Izzy Fry was 10th, Amelia Quirk 16th and Niamh Bridson 19th overall.

“I’d just like to say how proud I am of myself and my team-mates for battling through an incredibly tough course,” said Tank afterwards.

“The mud was unreal. I’m delighted to have bettered my result of 13th from last year and I am excited for what’s to come in the future.”

Tank was one of three Devon athletes to impress in Brussels.

Exeter Harriers’ Innes Fitzgerald dominated the women’s under-20 race, while club colleague Sam Mills was fifth in the men’s under-20 event.
